  • 92 PPs: Bottle had been on shelf at Dorothy Lane Oakwood for several years, so, as a precaution, I dug out the bottle at the back of the shelf. $32/750. AP 40 060 003 09; 7.5 pabv. Cellars International/Rudi Weist, San Marcos, CA.

    Screw-capped, with VDP gold eagle.

Tasted from Impitoyable first. Has deep orange-gold color, most unlike typical Kabinetts.

White peaches and pleasant diesel and tangerine peel when cold, right out of the refrigerator. Overtones suggestive of botrytis. As it warms:

Halbtrocken plus, I'd say, because of the firm, energetic, almost sharp acidity, with a hint of bakeshop on the finish, sometimes as is found in botrytis Riesling with some bottle age. This acid is the most interesting thing about the wine early on, giving it a very interesting focus as well as juiciness, almost like there is an ever so small amount of volatile acidity (but there isn't, actually). Nicely intense and with a certain stony finesse, with restrained fruit and drinking well now .Gains power noticeably as it's given air.

A classic "Hock" (Hochheimer, as the British would say) which, like other Hochheimers, must be allowed to speak for itself, and will age effortlessly.
By the way, it seems a little better integrated out of a Riedel Riesling, on all fronts.

The Reichestal is a vineyard that is oriented along the Main, at the same altitude approximately as the best vineyard, the Hölle, extending west from the town as the Hölle extends eastward; re;atively flat, consiting of a mixture of sand and gravel from the river, with marl and loess.I believe that David Schildknect gave this an 86, with which I'll beg to differ a bit.

He did state that this vintage had to be highly selected, because of rampant botrytis, to make reasonable Kabinett; the selection's influence on the quality is apparent.

  • Clear with medium/lite viscosity in the glass. Flowers, tropical fruit and subtle medicinal on nose. Juice box with a lite spritz on palate. Short finish that leans towards being bitter.
