NV Rogna (Marta, NYC): [Double decanted around noon for about 3 hours.] Ripe black fruit in the nose. Silky black fruit. Lots of tar. Medium length. Quite a success for the vintage.

A Study of Vigna Rionda (Racines, NYC): What a pleasant surprise the 2003 Roagna Vigna Rionda presented on this evening, totally transcending the warmth of the vintage, showing a dark, rich display of ripe black cherry, exotic spice, hints of tobacco and sweet herbs. On the palate, I found soft textures backed by lively acidity, in a lifted and almost feminen expression, giving way to notes of black cherry with hints of spice, minerals and round tannins. The finish was long yet remarkably fresh, resonating on sweet spices, tobacco and herbs, with just a hint of tannin lingering. This was a return to form, following my last tasting of the ‘03 V.R. and I’m very happy to see that my initial thoughts from 2011 have come to fruition.

This is cheeky, I mean on day one, after a careful decanting for sediment and some air, this was just there, but what was there was just Nebbiolo wine with some age on it. I opened this to share with some friends, but was not able to go as planned, so I re-corked it, and enjoyed it on night #2 - and then, fireworks. Silky, and complex with a long, elegant final - true to its Cru, one which few should ever underestimate. OK, never. Marvelous, with the proper aeration. Drink thru 2028+. highly recommended
Roagna Exploration Tastings (Morrell Wine Bar & Cafe): The nose showed masses of ripe black cherry, fig and plum with sweet balsamic spices, dried roses and crushed stone. On the palate, soft, chewy textures were offset by zesty acidity as dried cherry and spices developed on the senses yet didn’t last as long as I’d hoped. The finish was medium-long showing hints of dark fruit and minerals.

(VIGNA RIONDA Roagna Barolo) Grab Bag Dear Friends, I normally save something like this for a Friday afternoon but I've been in tastings all day and this list of confirmations just came through (it's nearly 4:00am here). After today's exercise, I can say with humility that the excitement of a new vintage still gets my blood pumping. The lifelong process of understanding the truth in wine leads us through a vinous treasure hunt that never ceases to amaze me... Which brings me back to today's offer You can throw darts at the list below - all are more than worth owning and the prices are about as enticing as I've seen. I don't have access to scores or pricing data so you will have to do some research on our own but, I do know, the prices are very low...
