typical modern style barolo where the varietal characteristics have all but vanished leaving a darker wine with black cherry notes and the unmistakable fingerprints of new oak. you have some of the best land in the world and a wonderful varietal in Nebbiolo and what do you do? you go and destroy what could have been something special. people are onto new oak barriques and how it changes the varietal characteristics of the wine. sorry i bought this wine years ago when i did not know better.

This had a few hours of air before tasting. Color was a rich medium to dark but still slightly translucent ruby, garnet. Nose has a clear vanilla oak punch up front, along with cherry liqueur. Pretty typical modern Barolo flavor profile with a good deal of tar on the finish. Not a blockbuster but pleasant enough with a skirt steak.

This seemed a little light for a barolo, still, it had nice flavors. the tannins were almost nonexistent, the nose was good and the mouthfeel was pleasant. All in all, a very pleasant, easy drinking wine that kept you coming back for another glass. Definitely in its drinking window and much better than the bottle I had last year.

and a few more Italians (sort of) (Willoughby, Ohio): Nice showing, pop and pour, it was drinking well at first, but did improve with air. The nose has cherries, raspberries, and black raspberries. Also some tar. On the palate, this is medium bodied. Less fruit than on the nose. Everything seems to be there and in balance. As it opens in the glass, there is a nice complexity. Not a block buster, more subtle in nature. Certainly not yet at full maturity. Next to a 2010 Chianti, the lack of ripeness here was very noticeable but that wasn't bad at all with the food.
