  • This got increasingly sexier and more appealing over the course of an hour at which point it became the closest to Burgundy, nebbiolo-based wine I've ever tasted. Lots of experts talk about the parallels but I've never appreciated it before other than academically. There's so much sweet red fruit (without being extracted) it smells for all the world like a good Cote de Nuits villages, and at least tonight the more typical nebbiolo aromas of anise and rose are suppressed. Same impressions in the mouth. It tastes like a well made Burgundy. I don't know whether this is good or not in the ultimate scheme of things, but it's a great drink nonetheless. I'm going to worry about it all the way to the bottom of the bottle.

  • Extremely nice. A very pleasant wine with lots of character. Quite soft and lovely.

  • Enjoyed over a couple of days. This is really too young right now. On the first day, tobacco leaf, licorice, tar and dried black fruit in a very tannic structure. On the second day, more polished fruit, dried roses and more tobacco and licorice. Could turn out to be okay with 5+ years in the cellar.

  • I enjoyed this. It had the light cherry fruit and soft, but still evident tannin that I expect from Carema Nebbiolo. It wasn't a group favorite when tasted alongside bigger, meatier wines, but I'd drink again, especially for the price.

  • This may be so straightforward a wine as to never approach an outstanding score, or so brilliantly straightforward in its expression that it could never be denied. I'm definitely in favor of the latter interpretation. The only Carema I've ever had previously is the estimable Ferrando, and both the white and black labels are well worth trying. But this unheralded little gem from a small co-op, which I must dutifully report is called "Cantina dei produttori nebbiolo di carema," is, well, awesome. Fragrant, airy, berry-inflected nose with notes of forest, leather and only a trace of tar. Borderline delicious, the attractive fruit immediately asserts itself while other elements play a supporting role. I'm probably not expressing myself very well, but this is far more fruit-driven (not in a ripe or extracted way) than let's say a barbaresco. It's got some of the brightest nebbiolo fruit I've ever tasted, and who knew, you don't need to achieve Zen master levels of concentration to appreciate it. The palpable acidity and tannins, though, are all nebbiolo and quite assertive on the finish, suggesting a considerable potential for aging. For around $27 this could well be the best QPR nebbiolo I have ever tried.

Only one thing is bugging me mightily. The store where I bought this, one of the most knowledgeable you will encounter anywhere, has this listed on their website as a Riserva, but the word doesn't appear on the label. Is it or isn't it? I'm so confused I dashed off an "inquiring minds want to know" email to the US importer. I guess I need to get a life...
