This seemed to me to be a pretty perfect example of the, er, unique approach to Burgundy Ponnelle is reputed for -- getting by with a little help from the South... the slender proportions here were totally Burgundian but the flavor had this unmistakable twist of grenache, functioning just like the twist of lemon in a cocktail. Chateauneuf? Italy? Algeria? I don't know. Whatever the cause, it definitely gave this wine a more lingering impression than the Thorin, which seemed a little nondescript in comparison. Maybe the boost added some longevity, keeping the wine's figure intact after the pinot flavor had meekly checked out. Anyway, certainly a remarkable bottle for its finesse as well as an interesting historical relic.
