  • Tasted blind, this wine had a deep red center and light red/orange rims. I did not guess it was nearly as old as it actually was. The medium+ intensity nose showed ripe cherries, anise, oranges, and some rhubarb.

In the mouth, this wine was medium bodied with great balance and integration. It displayed light, rounded tannin, solid acidity, and attractive mineral oriented fruit.

This appeared to be at its peak but should last another 5-10 years or so at this level.

  • What a treat. A nose of Umeboshi, dried flowers and slightly old baking spice. Past its prime for sure, but the acidity is still lively. There’s some real tertiary fruit, pomegranate molasses, plum skin and tomato stalk still present on the palate. I was surprised that the wine still had some legs and showed better after an hour, hour and a half.. 80 years and still vinous. A glass of history!

  • Riojas (Donato Enoteca, Redwood City, CA): Gorgeous nose (A-). Excellent palate (B++). Still is pretty good shape!

  • Like the 54 Murrieta, this really transformed in the glass. At first all dark and brooding with minerallity and even a Pauillac graphite quality. Plenty of acid and more focused than the Murrieta or Tondonia. Extremely long finish. After some time in the glass, this got much brighter, more complex, and more polished with cherry-tinged minerality. Amazingly well preserved with plenty of time left as the fruit/structure balance is really quite impeccable. Thanks Brad.
