  • Concerto del vino italiano workshop “Barolo 2009 vs 1999”, Pairing 6: Ciabot Berton Barolo. Both wines were poured into the glasses approximately four hours prior to the tasting.

The 1999 was poured from magnum. It was medium garnet in colour and offered a very limited, medicinal nose that reminded me of the smell of hospitals. The palate was amazingly flavour-stripped, with medium- to medium-plus acidity, high dry and slightly bitter tannin and average length. My least favourite wine of the tasting. Past its prime; drink up. 86

The 2009 was medium ruby in colour and offered a ripe nose of red fruit and candies. On the palate the wine showed sweet, somewhat artificial, ripe red and dark berry flavours, paired with medium to medium-plus acidity, medium-plus to high tannin, a slightly creamy mouthfeel and very good length. Made from higher yields than the other 2009s of the tasting; designed for early drinking. I liked it better than the 1999. 87

  • Ready to drink, good typical nebbiolo grape brick red colour, quite complex nose, maybe lack on acidity. Very good balance with alchool and tannins, easy to drink and to match with food. Medium long finish, fruit is almost away due to age. Should be drunk by 2012 in my opinion.
