-- tasted non-blind on Days 1 and 3 -- -- Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre --
Day 1: NOSE: not funky; smoky dark red berries; smoked deli sausage; old wood cabinetry; not fumey; hints of florals, minty children’s paste, and black licorice; moderately expressive.
BODY: pure purple-tinged garnet color of medium-deep depth; medium-full bodied.
TASTE: “dark”: concentrated plum with a fleck of leather; a tad prune-ish, but good freshness; spicy; very fine tannins; not very grippy; alcohol is not noticeable; nice ripeness and balance for the vintage; no serious structure, but this will go at least 10 years, no problem; Very very solid, but nothing groundbreaking. Good value at $30 - $35.
B: 50, 5, 12, 16, 7 = 90
Day 3: NOSE: sweet balsamic reduction; dark earthy fruits.
BODY: medium to medium-full bodied.
TASTE: good minerality; fruit seems a bit dilute on the back-end; purple fruits; hints of leather, wood, and black cherry; sweet and also slightly bitter; quite nice for the price. Gut impression score for today: 89 – 90.
