  • This 50/50 blend of syrah and cabernet sauvignon is really quite pretty. It's 13.8% and is quite cool (as opposed to hot) on both the nose and the palate. It speaks of boysenberry, cassis, eucalyptus, and stone, and shows some elegance on the palate to boot; it's full yet restrained; it's no fruit bomb. The texture is distinctively brothy – a real pleasure. As with the 2002 Granite Crown, however, it's not terribly complex, lacks presence at the back palate, and finishes quite short. I drank this over 4 nights and it neither improved nor degraded. The varietal bottlings (cab and syrah both) as well as the Claret Prestige blends do show complexity and length, so I'm not sure why the Granite Crowns I've had don't likewise extend further.
