A surprising amount of detail on the cepage for a wine from the late 90s - 70% Auxerrois (a synonym for Malbec in Cahors), 25% Merlot, 5% Tannat. At 25 years this is still full coloured without too much bricking at the rim. Purchased from the property and well stored since. Significant sediment despite three days of standing and careful decanting. Attractively well preserved and will last.

Only the very slightest sign of aging in the colour; deep damask red, much darker than most. Big meaty nose, leather, heavy spices (cardamon, mace, allspice), a sweet lift of liquorice perfumed at the edge with a little vanilla and lily-of-the-vallley. Still quite tannin rich, drying, sloes, unsweetened blackcurrant, leather, dry fruits. Excellent with food, a little tough on its own. Had it with magret of duck.

Bought this wine at the vineyard in 2001. Like most Cahors, tannic and astringent when young. It has mellowed very well, probably more than an 'old' Cahors would have done. I have sweet leather, damsons and a hint of sage on the nose. It's velvet smooth in the mouth but with a styptic tannin bite at the back of the palate. Green peppers, old leather and blackthorn fruit (sloes). Stands up to food (lasagne bolognesa) very well; cut through the rich cheese and meat sauces with ease. A good wine for those with an 'old world' palate, probably too tannic for an aperitif wine.

Might still improve, still tannic, but nowhere near as bad as some older-style Cahors that I have had.
