  • The year 1583 was the birth of the first Count of Fefiñanes who built the Palacio de Fefiñanes or Palace of Fefiñanes for which the Bodegas is named. According to the winery this wine is a tribute to the first Count. "1583" is indeed the most premium of the wines made at the bodega. From 100% Albariño the grapes are sourced from the Val do Salnes sub-region around the town of Cambados. After crush the wine is fermented in a combination of 1, 2 and 3 year old American and French oak barrels. An additional 5-6 months are spent aging in second use sherry cask with bȃtonage and then "1583" is transferred to stainless steel vats for aprox. 6 more months before bottling. What you end up with is a high quality white that is somewhat similar to Premier or Grand Cru Chablis. Complex aromas of yeast, slight toasty oak and elegant minerals notes. Very rich and fruity on the palate with an intensity rarely scene from the varietal. I'm not quite sold on barrel aged Albariño but this one is well crafted and not overtly oaked. Only 12.5% abv this wine should peak during 2011-2012. To note 2008 was considered an excellent vintage in Rias Baixas. I found this at the Spanish Table in Mill Valley for $42.99 US retail. Only 4,000 bottles were produced.
