  • Drunk with friends with a super sweet sticky toffee pudding. Sweet unctuous with a whole array of dried fruit on the palate. Not so much liquid Christmas pudding as a feast in a glass.

  • Dim Sum Club at Mitzo (Mitzo, Grand Park Orchard): Sweet and luscious, this was a nice way to end a meal. The nose was all pecan pie and sticky date pudding, with nutty, sticky, spicy tones weaving in and out of dry fruited liqueur notes. The palate was thick and syrupy, with an oily, creamy mouthful redolent with dried figs and dates seasoned with notes of spice and herbs lingering on a long finish. Delicious, but no more than one glass - otherwise, this would be way too rich.

  • Emilio Lustau Masterclass (Bel & Brio, Barangaroo): Almost burnt figs and almonds, walnuts, liquorice, preposterously thick, dense, more liquorice, crushed walnut, luscious, figgy and orange zest. Long. One of those thick, dense, sweet wines…reminds me of that Seppelt 100 y/o stuff.

  • Wine Cellar Spain (Wine Cellar): A deep to opaque brown-black colour accompanied by an orange-brown rim, this is very much a step up from the previous wine. Enticing aromas reminiscent of liquid sultana, raisins, and Christmas cake, providing a sense of richness
The palate entry hits you with a liquorice assault intertwined with the sweetness. And this is an extremely sweet wine (RS: 400g/l+): thick and viscous to unctuous and laden with mocha, with oscillating coffee grinds and dark 70% chocolate flavours. This gathers pace as rum, raisin, Demerara sugar, and even coconut join the fray, all with serious concentration and yet with a vein of acidity to help mitigate the sweetness. Very much a thick and gloopy texture the wine evokes and as it opens reveals a bitter edge to the treacle, reminiscent of Thornton's black toffee. The wine concludes with hints of dried figs and Medjool dates, adding to its complexity. Notable alcohol of 15%. Cracking!
