  • Opera Wine 2017 - 100 Great Producers (Verona, Italy): I haven't had this since it was released. At the time, it was unlike anything I'd ever had, i.e. to me it was unique. And, delicious. However, my palate has changed a lot since then, or another way of looking at it is that my preferences have changed. Today I doubt I'd much care for this on release the same way I melted all those years ago. But, to see where it is now, the lessons that come along with it. wow. It's a glorious wine with the elegance that can come with maturity. Dried fruits, leaves, soil notes, dried purple florals still bright in their way. Exotic at times, and a very nice time warp of sorts today. The EtOH is fully resolved; should drink another 5-7 years if kept in a cool cellar. highly recommended

  • Served blind in a tasting of 1964-1999 Italian wines.

Brooding dark red color with slight bricking and a touch of haziness. Initially the nose is dominated by a heady blackcurrant aroma, almost reminiscent of blackcurrant juice concentrate and Chilean Cab. However, the bouquet quickly resolves to reveal aromas of dried dark cherry, dates, prunes, redcurrants, some truffle and sous-bois, a little ripe blackcurrant, ahint of chocolate and a touch of aromatic herbs, all wrapped up in matured, syrupy sweetness. Opulent and quite full-bodied in the mouth with rich, developed flavors of dried dark cherries, sweet maraschino cherries, cranberries, sour cherries, some raisin, a hint of chocolate and a touch of bitter spice. With its high acidity and rather pronounced, mouth-drying tannins the wine feels very structured and powerful. The high alcohol (15%) gives the wine some obvious heat. Structured, long and somewhat astringent finish with mature flavors of sour cherry, acidic red berries, raisin, some prunes and a hint of truffle. Good tannic grip with some alcohol heat.

An utterly compelling Sfursat; stylistically I probably wouldn't have enjoyed this wine when it was young, but now, close to 20 years of age, it is starting to drink really nicely; I especially liked how the fruit profile veered more towards the red, cherry-and-tart berry end of spectrum instead of the dark fruit end, despite its sweetness and concentration. Has some quite developed characteristics, but feels far from being really old, with the structure especially feeling taut and sinewy still. Flavor-wise the wine has probably reached its peak, but structurally the wine is still very young; probably will keep easily for some years, but I'd drink this one sooner rather than later. Probably will start fading after some 20 years of vintage. In its current condition, the wine is hands-down excellent stuff. Close to being my wine of the night.

  • Unique if nothing else.

Nose initially is all Piedmont with truffle, leather, mushroom, cranberry before evolving into a sweet cherry, dusty saddle, dried fruit amarone cousin. Finish delves close to vin santo, and given the listed ABV (15% in 1999) it's not an in-apt comparison. Yet, tannins completely resolved and effortlessly light for the heat still present on the nose. Curious to try other vintages.

Very hard to score. On drinkability it's an easy 93 despite a touch of heat and mint on the very back end. However, the complexity is lacking to a point, hence the desire to see if this is bottle/vintage variation.

Paired perfectly with a provencal lamb stew with sweet potatoes and carrots.

  • Opened and drank over 2 hours. Dark red in colour with some bricking near the rim. Amarone-like nose with rich and dried fruits, black licorice and balsam. In the mouth it has this metallic/copper thing going on with sweeter dried fruits. Nice acidity and soft but noticeable tannins. A very interesting and delicious wine. Drinking very well right now. Excellent.

  • DAWGS offline - February 2009 (Amici's in Carrollton, TX): WIML92

Tasted February 11, 2009 at an offline.

Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Big nose of peet, licorice, leather, florals and dried dark fruits. Rich flavors of berries with some added notes of red licorice. Medium acidity and tannins, fairly full bodied. Was tasting pretty doggone good the next day as leftovers. Drink over the shorter term, maybe medium if you'd like to push it.

(Nino Negri "5 Stelle" Sfursat) Soaring nose of spice, sweet carrots (almost caramelized), game, bright bing cherries and minerals. Also a touch of oak. Beautiful ripe fruit with exquisite concentration. Medium bodied with great focus to the fruit. Nice mineral streak runs through the wine. The oak use is beautiful. Great wine.
