  • Tasted double blind from a small capped bottle as part of a zoom tasting. Man this nose was funky when poured - yeasty and stinky but with some beautiful and light red fruits behind that. Now with time it’s more integrated - reminds me a bit of dom rose - red fruits along with a popcorn savory note. The palate is tart and a bit blue cheesy and funky. Some yeast a bit beefy. Maybe reminds me a bit of cantillion as well. Finish is long with tart red fruits and yeast. I kinda like this. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1-1.5/2 = 16.5-17.5/20.

  • Leiden in Burgundy November 2013; 11/21/2013-11/22/2013: Drank at Comptoir de Tonton, Beaune. With cheese. Reductive style. Excellent companion with the cheese. Since I have no experience with Jura wines (this is my first), I can't rate this.

  • If you can get past the reductive, rubber tire elements in the nose, there's a lot of sweet fruit underneath. Not for the faint of heart.

  • A Night of Jura Wines (Polena - Washington, DC): the color on this "red" wine is more like watered down sweet tea mixed with cranberry juice. tim described the aromas of the wine thusly: "it smells like someone farted on a tire." yes, there is some stinkiness. clearly some brettanomyces sneaking around in this wine. but to me it smells like braised pork belly. no, i wasn't eating pork belly, so it's not that. it really smelled like you're cooking bacon on high heat, went to take a shower or something, and came back 45 minutes later. also, it smells like car exhaust. i thought of the jersey turnpike while smelling this wine. not sure if that's a good thing, being a jersey boy, or if it means this wine could've poisoned me. the palate is surprisingly approachable. okay, maybe not approachable, but the average wine taster wouldn't spit this out. good tannins still, zingy acid. the palate feels a bit confused to me, a bit off balance. i actually do get some wild strawberry and cranberry fruit. the finish is quite long and leaves me with a leathery taste. what an interesting example of what the poulsard grape can do, especially when aged. several tasters commented that the wine reminded them of burgundy a bit, and i can definitely see that comparison.

  • This time I was prepared to really let it breathe. On day 1 it was more substantial and interesting than the first bottle two months ago. Nice notes of complexity and very true to its young Poulsard counterparts. Would be curious to taste a 2000 now.
