  • Wine tasting for friends: Bought at an auction. Perect condition.
Pulled in an emergency from the cellar to replace a bottle of Grange that was flawed. Served alongside Le Pavillon 2000
Very idiosyncratic wine, which led to lots of discussions among the tasters. Some of them thought it was OTT, others, like me, enjoyed the power of the wine and its youth.
That said, it's true that it reminded me more of a high-octane Châteauneuf-du-Pape than a syrah from Northern Rhone Valley.
After one night in the fridge, it had tamed and had become much more complex.
So, yes, this is still extremely youthful and deserves a looooong decant if drunk now.

  • Shockingly primary. Really think this will be better in 5-10 years (!!!) as there's plenty of balance here, nothing tired heavy/pruny

  • Smoky rich fruit with spices, tar and licorice. On first opening it was a bit on the sweet side, but after an hour of settling it is now beautifully balanced. Medium length finish and nicely integrated tannins. Still very fruit driven despite the age, so could last for a few more years (but this is my only bottle). I don't drink a lot of big, rich Shirazes these days, but this is perfect, classic Barossa. Going to enjoy every drop... although I do have to share!

  • Online Blind Tasting #2: *** brief notes from online blind tasting ***
Note is based on a tasting sip in the morning on day one, ~4cl on the evening and 0,1l filled in a bottle and sealed with argon gas on the evening of day three.
    Glass: Zalto Universal
Robert Callaghan and Chris Ringland produced this beauty from the Hoffmann vineyard, the oldest plots planted 1880. Perfectly stored bottle and cork.
Clear, deep ruby color with a garnet rim. On day one fantastic, pronounced, developing nose with lots of dark fruit, tar, spices, pepper, some lactic notes, some floral and herbal notes, smoke. On day three a bit less intense and more alcohol driven. Nevertheless very dense and complex.
Dry, lots of sweetness from extract and the 14,5% abv. The high acidity balanced the alcohol perfectly, so that it was never broad or fat. Medium+, velvet tannin. Pronounced flavours with lots of dark and red fruit, spices, liquorice, some tar, white pepper, speck and smoke. Rather cool, elegant, wonderful density, beautiful texture. Deep and dense. Long, very lingering fruity and spicy finish. Not yet at its full peak. Potential for at least 10+ years. 94+

  • From the Hoffman vineyard, located at Ebenezer in the Northern Barossa. One of the most famous vineyards in the valley. Cork was in good shape with minimal soak. Still relatively fresh; blueberries and plums with oak well integrated. Fine tannins. A benchmark Barossa wine.
