On the nose, more barnyard and leather than fruit. My first few sips were way too hot so I ran the glassful through my vinturi to mellow it out some and it was much better. So this wine is still pretty young and needs decanting, for me, anyway. Taste is dark fruit, a bit of heat, smooth tannins and maybe some oak. It has some complexity and a good long finish. Excellent balance, a very good wine with hearty dishes and red meat. Also great by itself. It has plenty of life left, should drink well for at least another five years. (450 views) | | | Tasted by Mivvy on 11/7/2009 & rated 88 points: This bottle was better than the last one and overall very enjoyable. Dark fruits and pepper on the nose, licorice, vanilla and pepper builds through the palate. Finish is not acidic as previous notes but does let it down and would score higher otherwise. (1129 views) | | | Tasted by richard thorne on 10/6/2009 & rated 91 points: The inky purple colour reflects the depth of aromas and flavours to come. Dried fruits, chocolate and pepper on the nose. Strong tannins balance the cherry and blackberry fruit flavours and there is enough acidity to prevent any jamminess. There are numerous flavours here and a strong finish. This will improve over at least 5 years and last for another 10. (1393 views) | | | Tasted by Mivvy on 9/16/2009 & rated 87 points: Interested to taste this. When purchased was a bit of a brute. Now has mellowed out a bit but still full flavoured. Slightly out of balance on the finish - a touch acidic - but still a good drink. (1535 views) | | | Tasted by Routerhead on 7/11/2009 & rated 93 points: Bouquet of dark cherries, yielding after about 15 minutes to minerals. Drink now. Not because of the heat or the tannins - those are barely present, but because it just needs that time for the fruit to come out and for it to really blossom. I did not, and remembered hearing some great things about it, but the first taste was really "meh". Please give it some air. Meal was corned beef brisket, boiled potatoes, and buttered carrots.
Color: 5/5 - Dark brick red, with good clarity and the color extending just about to the glass, which is pretty impressive in an 8 year old wine. It's nice and saturated, but maybe not lustrous. Or maybe my glass just has fingerprints all over it.
Nose: 12/15 - Powerful nose. I can smell it as it sits in the glass on the table, about a foot away from me. Nice, not super special, but nice. Earthy tones, a little musty at first, but after a while that fades away into a rich scent of dried figs, cracked peppercorns, and mulberries. Given a bit more time, chocolate pushes out with a vengeance.
Flavor: 8/10 - Very earthy, leathery, followed shortly after by a snap of fresh fig, sour and black cherries. Tasting after having some of the beef helps to provide the "meat" flavor that is so typical of Syrah & Shiraz that I was just missing. Definitely improves with time and is now producing an intoxicating mix of white and dark chocolate as well. And the tannins, just this minute, showed themselves.
Finish: 8/10 - At first this was a little twiggy on the finish, reminding me of much of the Pinot Noirs I've had (which isn't many, mind you) and it turned me off. But I pressed on, had some of the potatoes and sipped again, and that twigginess went away. Time also served to get rid of it. Quite smooth, and there's no heat. You'd never know this wine was 14.2% ABV. Except I just told you. The tannins are really announcing their presence now - I was missing them earlier and I'm so glad they showed up. I'm also beginning to get some dried meat on the finish as well.
Aging: 3/5 - This is well balanced, and there's definitely enough tannin, structure, and fruit for it to continue drinking well for at least the next 5 years. Maybe more.
Overall: 4/5 - I was not impressed at first sampling of this, but as it opens up and develops, I'm appreciating it more and more. I would have to say this truly is a great "dinner" wine, as the early stages of it go beautifully with food, and as it opens and progresses throughout the meal, comes to its own to become an enjoyable after-dinner conversation wine. (3217 views) | | | Tasted by iByron on 2/25/2009 & rated 85 points: Color (5/5): Dark purple with color to the edge. Nose (12/15): Aged leather and dark purple fruit. Palate/Finish (12/20): Juicy stewed plum in a shoe. After time there is a sweet vanilla blackberry mid-palate, but something tart and iron-y is in the mix that, while not unpleasant, is not exactly endearing. The tannins are firm but forgiving. Quality/Potential (6/10): Well made and characteristic if a bit harsh. Should keep a good 5-7 years. Solid effort. (3259 views) | | | Tasted by vaaccess on 2/10/2009 & rated 84 points: Ok, this is throwing me for a loop. The other bottle I had was exceptional. This one, however, is not. It's tart and the tannins are balanced pretty well, but there's a slightly rotten flavor that while I don't think it is "bad", just isn't the same level as the first bottle. We'll see what the next ones are like, but comparitively, I was unimpressed. (3294 views) | | | Tasted by luckyinla on 1/8/2009 flawed bottle: Cork completely crumbled during opening. (No other obvious signs of spoilage.) Wine was undrinkable. (3565 views) | | | Tasted by Tarrant on 12/8/2008 & rated 93 points: Just lovely, a nice amount of bottle age has settled this bruiser down and the integration was complete in my opinion, really nice - Very dark, full bodied notes of black fruit, pepper, cigar box, chocolate and vanilla notes on the nose, once again well integrated and balanced, complex spice notes, smooth on the palate with excellent length, awesome (93 Points). (3560 views) | | | Tasted by bkarney on 12/3/2008 & rated 88 points: Very tasty, actually liked it better than the 03. The last glass was quite a surprise as it needs a decanter big time! Very dark cork and beautiful deep red/purple hue to the wine. Nice tannic backbone leads me to think this will only get better with a few more years. (3598 views) | | | Tasted by vaaccess on 12/1/2008 & rated 90 points: Wow. This is a solid wine. Good structure, nice fruit. Simply yummy and what I would expect from a good Australian Shiraz. Definitely glad I bought this one! (3599 views) | | | Tasted by Krugsters on 9/26/2008 & rated 89 points: Clear, intense deep purple with a pale rim. Clean, pronounced nose with black fruit and hints of blackberry, black cherry, oak and developing liquorice notes. Dry, medium acidity and medium-high tannins, alcohol, body & intensity. On the palate loads of black fruit, blackberry, black cherry, with a notes of coffee and pepper. Nicely integrated oak, a well balance wine, great quality. Ready to drink but can age; still has the structure to do so. Spicey, rich, and well-balanced. I have a few more, and I am going to let them lie down for a while. I suspect the wine will be a even smoother in a few years. (4696 views) | | | Tasted by jmoskow on 5/30/2008 & rated 88 points: Very jammy, almost overpowering grape jam taste. but, it had spice and enough tanins to tie it together. Nice value. *Penfolds Bin 28 is a showcase for warm-climate Australian Shiraz - ripe, robust and generously flavoured. First made in 1962, Bin 28 is named after the famous Barossa Valley Kalimna vineyard purchased by Penfolds in 1945 and from which the wine was originally sourced. Today, Bin 28 is a multi-region, multivineyard blend, with the Barossa Valley always well represented.

Shiraz thrived in such conditions, delivering excellent fruit with great intensity of flavour across the classic regions of South Australia.
- Grape variety Shiraz (Syrah)
- Maturation 12 months in used American oak.

* Winemaker comments by Peter Gago
- Colour: Deep dark crimson with an imposing purple core.
- Nose: An amalgam of mulberry and liquorice with fig, cold meats and white chocolate all adding to the wine’s overall complexity, even in youth. A generous Shiraz fruit lift, with evocative Christmas cake spices, dried fruits and barely perceptible oak beneath.
- Palate A n expansive continuum of seductively complex flavours, alluringly wrapped around a firm, but rounded, ripe, tannic structure. Dark berry and cherry fruits with liquorice and cocoa notes are evident throughout, with a wonderfully balanced and softly rounded tannic finish - all adding up to an archetypal expression of the Bin 28 wine style. Years of cellaring potential, yet drinking very well now.
