Community Tasting Notes (2)

  • New Year's Eve 2005 (Cafe La Haye, Sonoma): Second wine of the evening, purchased from the La Haye list. Spicy and floral, very expressive nose. Forward and inviting on the palate, with nice balance of fruit and acidity. Fell short only in the company of the other wines this evening.

  • Tuesday, October 11, 2005 The ‘02 version of this wine made a very favorable impression on me. So when I heard this bottle calling to me from the bin of a wine shop, I couldn’t resist. It called again when I went to look for a foil for the richness of peanut soup. Pairing wine and food for similarities is fun and not difficult. However, finding a foil for a flavor or characteristic in food, for me, can be more elusive. This is one of those times. I’d hoped to pull something with good fruit AND good acidity. I recalled the ‘02 having both. I should have known that something was up with either the wine or me when I wrote that the color was a pale yellow, ’like healthy pee.’ That is not a descriptor that I willingly use, but it, uh, streamed out easily as I looked at the wine. While the nose had some good fruit, it also showed something off, almost stinky. However, this was neither the telltale TCA characteristics of that of VA, and eventually, it blew off. The palate gave up loads of apricot, hazelnut and spice with a touch of toast on the finish. But it was a hot finish. While it delivered good fruit, it lacked any zip or verve. The acidity just was not there. And without the acidity, it lacked the ability to function as a foil. It just sat there. I should have pulled a medium chard or oaked sauvignon blanc. Live and learn. 14.2% alc. With peanut soup and salad of mixed greens and avocado.
