Very deep and extracted and I would never guess that this is nearly ten tears old. Pretty four-square Ballard Canyon Syrah and probably more intense than complex and almost comes off like a CA riff on Cornas. Very meaty on both the nose and palate, with smoke, black pepper, very ripe blackberry and maybe a touch of olive... but I might be projecting a bit there. There is a pretty big dose of graphite that starts in the mid-palate and just keeps rising through the finish... which is surprisingly long. This is clearly very well made, but it reads more "correct" to the varietal, with the volume turned up. The tannins are well integrated, but a little grainy. Given the overall heft of the wine, I think it has at least 5 years in it, but it might just last, rather than really develop.
The second half of the bottle, which was previously Coravined, was more open, generally richer and slightly more fruit forward, although this is still meat and mineral dominated. Very round through the mid-palate and probably a bit more tannic grip. The finish adds an espresso note that really lingers. More of a 92+ but a lot of that depends on your preference for a meaty style of Syrah.
