Maison Champy - Beaune
Tasted Wednesday, March 21, 2012 - Thursday, March 22, 2012 by Burgundy Al with 1,900 views
Sensational two day tasting with different producers each day. These are not in the sequence tasted, but rather by day, in the tasting books' alphabetical sequence.
(3/21/2012)
Wine tasting. Good black fruit and plenty of spice on the nose, with some interesting barnyard aromas as well. Good textures and concentration, with good potential, but in a rather earthy fashion.

Wine tasting. Strawberry and red cherry to start with plenty of alluring baking spice. Great cherry flavors that come across as big and powerful. Mouth coating tannins, with big fruit and spice re-emerging on long finish. To me, this has exciting 91-92 point potential.

Wine tasting. Racked last week. Mostly red fruit aromas with delicate floral touch, some tarragon and vanilla. Palate shows both black and red cherry with very elegant silky tannins. Long, broad finish. This has huge potential, but like most good vintages of this wine will probably need 10 years to show well and 20 years to reach its full potential. Impressive. I will be excited to compare and contrast this to its also wonderful 2009 counterpart 10 years from now.

Wine tasting. Excellent for its level, and for me a big step up in quality over the MSD Bussiere. Aromas of bright red cherry, strawberry and sweet spice while also slightly floral. Palate shows slightly more lean red and black cherry, perfectly supported with great minerality, acidity and sneaky good tannins. Powerful, expanding finish. This is a wine I like in almost every vintage, but the 2010 vintage exceeds expectations.

Serious, very long and powerful. Spice re-emerges at the finish. Perhaps not as great as Roumier's 2009 Bonnes Mares which I had the good fortune to try from barrel at the Domaine in late 2010...but that was the greatest young Bonnes Mares I've ever tasted.

Wine tasting. Blackberry and black cherry aromas with tarragon, espresso and cocoa. Same fruit profile on palate with big tannins and overall structure, but long, dense and powerful with an explosive, intense finish. Great long-term potential.

Wine tasting. Black cherry aromas with licorice and black pepper. Same black fruit on palate, well spiced, lots of energy giving a clean and precise finish along with moderate intensity.

Wine tasting. Tart red cherry on nose and palate. A bit structured from middle to end, with prominent acidity for its level.

Wine tasting. Big red fruit aromas. Compact red fruit on palate. Lots of structure dominant today vs. level of fruit.

Wine tasting. Red and black cherry on palate, overall lots of fruit and structure. Came across as slightly over-extracted to me today.

2010 Domaine Arlaud Clos de la Roche
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Wine tasting. Perfumed nose to start, very appealing with great cherry aromas. Today the black fruit flavors are a bit dense and bulky, but there is substantial extract and concentration. Long finish might not be nuanced today but shows good long-term potential.
