  • Double the Blind Double the Pleasure: 1983-96 Grand Cru Burgundy: Double decanted for ample sediment and served double blind. A pristine bottle with great fill and spinning capsule. This is for those who like their burgundy tertiary. All earth, black tea, leaves and a hint of celery salt. I knew what this was so I feel like the Dujac signature was present. There is still enough sweetness on the finish to render this not just interesting but downright enjoyable. Not a hint of 83 rot. Guesses were 1980 or 1985 due to the sweetness on the palate. A treat for sure. Alan asked us if we knew why the label was "Clos La Roche" and not "Clos de Le Roche". Of course we did not. Alan tells us that when he visited the domaine in the 80s, he learned that's the way Jacques' wife like to label it before the AOC put a stop to it. Very cool bit of history and a very pleasant surprise.

  • Dinner with the St. Louis Crowd et al. (St. Louis, MO): At this point, this is a fairly brown wine, in terms of its flavour profile. Autumnal, with plenty of decaying leaves and mushrooms and that sort of stuff. The palate is fairly thin, and while there is still some sweetness in the fruit, there is a slightly chemical taste on the back end that I associate with slightly rotting fruit, which I found slightly off-putting. In the context of a very weak vintage, this was a solid wine, but that's all I'm prepared to offer.

  • Terrific aromatics and nice length. Most of the night was a blur, but this stood out.

  • Served double blind... Pop and poured. This was a fascinating tasting experience. Pale red/orange color with an almost Madeira quality. It almost tasted fortified with brandy liqueur. Definite notes of orange peel, dried walnuts, and green stem. Delicious and very educational to taste.

  • Popped and poured- The clarity of the wine was striking. So pure. The nose was loaded with baking spices. Nutmeg, clove, and cinnamon. Mushrooms and iron. In the mouth it was almost like an orange liquor. Hints of Grand Marnier or a 100+ year old madeira. I thought the wine was still youthful and guessed it was 10 years younger than it was.
NEXT DAY- I noticed there was about 3-4 ounces still left in the bottle sitting on the dinner table. Much to my surprise, the wine went from being a very good wine the night before, to a simply stunning wine the morning after. The wine seemed to get younger overnight and flesh out even more. The fruit seemed to revert into a more primary stage shedding much of the orange liquor like qualities and the baking spices were exploding. Bright cherries drenched in liquid cinnamon, clove, and allspice. Wine went from being a 93 point wine the night before into a solid 96 pointer. WOW. Didn't see that coming.
