Chez Weber - Chicago IL

In 2004 great cuvee horizontal. Lots of apple, lemon custard, toasted brioche. Dense and slightly brooding start, more open on long finish. My favorite of the flight.

In 2004 great cuvee horizontal. Rich with plenty of lemon curd, toasted baguette and faint berry hints. Very good concentration. Better to cellar slightly longer.

In 2004 great cuvee horizontal. Charming, floral and a bit oddly tropical. Very fun and flashy, but this didn't come across quite as complete as the other great wines in the flight.

In 2004 great cuvee horizontal. Rich fruit with powerful textures and good+ weight. The yeasty/ bready character is even more dominant here vs the 1998 in the prior flight, which detracted from how much I enjoyed this wine.

In Lafon Charmes 96/02/05/07 vertical. Mature orchard fruit and poached pear throughout. Good+ weight, with an age appropriate level of maturity, but it has not quite picked up the complexity its age should provide. Still, very enjoyable.

In Lafon Charmes 96/02/05/07 vertical. Rich and dense with plenty of maturing apple and pear with savory spice. Moderate brightness made this slightly disappointing tonight vs much better bottles in the past few years.

In Lafon Charmes 96/02/05/07 vertical. An odd bottle that started out nicely, even if simple. This quickly became less interesting or even balanced. Some thought VA, but most of us were not sure what was going wrong here.

In Lafon Charmes 96/02/05/07 vertical. Fleshy start with ripe apple, toasted walnuts and slightly sweet spice. Very good weight and length, finishing with more minerality, acidity and brightness. Easily the best of the 4 bottles of Charmes.

Nicely floral start with plenty of apple, lemon and lime throughout. Great textures and length with an intense minerally finish. Very good now.

In 99/94/07/10 vertical. Rich and opulent with lots of baked apple and more sweet vs savory spice. very good weight. Mature, but at the expected level of evolution for 20 yo Grand Cru. Best I can ever recall for this (inconsistent) wine.

In 99/94/07/10 vertical. Apple and pear with good+ weight, very good balance and charm. One of the better bottles of this wine I can recall.

In 99/94/07/10 vertical. Lots of apple, lime lemon, lemon curd with nutmeg and floral notes. Very rich with a long, expanding finish. This powerhouse is beautiful now with a long life going forward. Another great performance for this wine.

In 99/94/07/10 vertical. Lots of apple, quince paste and toasted almond. Powerful finish, very good concentration start-to-finish. This was from 375 ml, which might have slightly affected the wine, making it less fresh vs a 750. Tonight's two bottles showed identical character, with one just slightly fresher vs the other.

Served (somewhat) blind, with us able to see the bottle was from Raveneau. Clearly seemed older and from a ripe vintage with some caramel apple. fleshy start, then more nuanced notes and mineral textures from middle forward. Good+ density. A very good 1997.

Charming dried red cherry with slowly cooked mushroom. Moderate weight and good+ length. Very fun.

Lots of red berry and cherry with good weight and very good length and textural charm. Not a powerhouse, but a charming Bonnes Mares. Very similar stylistically to the Mugnier 2011 Bonnes Mares I tasted last night.

More earth than fruit with good weight, but somewhat lacking in fruit ripeness and density. Clearly well made and textured.

Opened several hours earlier with a quick double decant. Started as nicely with mature red fruit, but this faded somewhat abruptly, seeming perhaps even heat damaged after 30 minutes in glass.

Opened several hours in advance with some time in a decanter. Broad cross-section of red fruit with lots of complexity and background, subtle spice notes. Rich and incredibly expressive already, with so much mineral and iron textures. Tannins are plenty big, but so well integrated. This was the most enjoyable wine in the flight tonight, even if I think the Drouhin 2005 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses has slightly greater potential.

Clearly so much great material here, this came across as simultaneously very ripe and also backward. I am very excited about this wine's (93+ point?) potential, but today it wasn't particularly showing Chambolle terroir.

Red, black and blue berries with alluring floral and spice aromas. Similar flavors showing sings of amazing potential, but firm tannins still need some cellar time to fully resolve and integrate. Very long finish, superbly exciting potential, but I'd hold to 2025 forward for optimal enjoyment.

Served single blind alongside the Amoureuses. Dense mostly red fruit with good weight and background spice. Nothing particularly indicated this was Chambolle for me, making it a very tasty, but somewhat indistinct Burgundy. I found the Amoureuses slightly more texturally complex, and made me prefer that wine.

Served single blind alongside the Bonnes Mares. Charming and ripe red fruit with subtle spice and elegant tannins. Nothing particularly indicated this was Chambolle for me, making it a very tasty, but somewhat indistinct Burgundy. I found this Amoureuses slightly more texturally complex than Bonnes Mares, making me prefer this wine.

Good flight, but I mistakenly brought Clos St Jacques, when I was supposed to bring the same two vintages of Jadot Bonnes Mares.
Lush and ripe black fruit, fully mature. Good density and length. Less complex vs the others in the flight and vs previous bottles.

An enticing array of mature black fruit, roasted meat, cooked mushroom and a complex set of meaty spice. Very good length and weight. Drinking very well right now.

Very dense black fruit with good concentration. Fully mature with an earthy finish that is not quite as exciting as its start. Still very good.

So much here. Black and red fruit with meaty spice in a vibrant, lithe package. Very powerful throughout. Still very young, but already accessible and charming.

In vertical. Everything good here. Mature red fruit, licorice, pepper, with earth just behind the fairly robust fruit. Good weight and length, everything in excellent balance.

In vertical. Ok, not as exciting as the 1985, but there is more weight and density here. Impressive red cherry with floral notes and very good length.

In vertical. Red and black cherry with good+ weight and length. Certainly enjoyable and fun, but still a bit backward. Nowhere close to the quality of the 1985 or 1989 in the flight.

In vertical. Ripe and certainly fun, also with very good density. Just less complex than the other vintages.

1996 Ruinart Champagne Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs 92 Points
France, Champagne
From magnum. Lots of bright apple, some lemon. Good concentration, but even better textures with lots of energy and lift. Very good now.

1998 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 93 Points
France, Champagne
From magnum. Complex array of orchard and stone fruit aromas and flavors with very good concentration and length. A great Champagne if you like the bready, yeasty style, and still a very good Champagne if you're less a fan of that style.

1998 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut 94 Points
France, Champagne
From magnum. Lots of apple and baked apple with almonds, brioche and candied lemon on finish. Still slightly backward from this magnum format, with lots of power and a long, lingering finish.
