Stazione Leopalda, Firenze
Tasted Monday, February 17, 2020 - Tuesday, February 18, 2020 by Tim Heaton with 872 views
A truly spectacular event held each year in the city of Florence that showcases new release wines (some brought their 2018s, some, deciding to hold them a while, their 2017s) from this very important growing region. A two-day tasting here in Firenze, before moving the following day to San Gimignano to taste the new releases of Vernaccia di San Gimignano.
My entire report can be found here: https://wp.me/p7fulH-28w
This represents 2+ days of tasting, it's a long report.

Anteprima Chianti Classico Collection, Florence
Forest, soil, and red/dark red fruit aromas; light spice. The medium-bodied palate is simple - nothing here says "riserva". An easy pass, for my palate.

Anteprima Chianti Classico Collection, Florence
Shows good promise, but this riserva is a bit closed just now. My only nit, today is the finish, it's rather brief. Attractive aromas, good+ quality. Likely to improve. recommended

Anteprima Chianti Classico Collection, Florence
Wow, so much pine: cone, tar/sap, tree, etc; herbal, then rolls into some lovely red fruits, soil. The palate is quite lovely, and there's substantial length. Bravo, Alessandro! The vintage might keep the price very favorable; might be one to load up on while others are sleeping. Drink 2020-2034. recommended+

Elegant, full-ish, well-lifted, and set to improve in the short term, though its not going to make any really old bones, either. If I see this on a wine list, it's a pretty easy/safe decision. recommended

Herbs, red/purple flowers, and red/dark red fruits follow from the nose to the med/med+ bodied palate. Decent length; may improve a bit in the short term, but not something I'll look to acquire. Nonetheless, recommended. Drink now thru 2029.

Red floral, leather, Tuscan dust/scrub bush, etc. There's serious depth here, and plenty of elegance, too; one of the best 2017 riserva tasted at this event. Very long; this caresses, it soothes. Brilliant, bravo! highly recommended+

Elegant, subtle power, and cheeky length. Lovely, and right in my wheelhouse. I only wish I could find it more often. This won't make old bones, but it's ready now, and will likely even improve in the short term. One of my most favorite producers in this region, and in Italia. highly recommended

Toasty oak; no real sense of grape of place. The palate is only slightly more interesting thanks to some good+ acidity. Short finish, pleasant, though nothing says 'riserva', to me. An easy pass for me.

Anteprima Chianti Classico Collection, Florence
Forest, soil, mushrooms, black truffle. Medium-bodied, juicy, structure, but falls short of compelling. That said, if offered a glass, or if seen on a list, it's a safe/sure bet. Lovely growing here, in a very high position in the region. Lingering finish. Drink 2021-2037. recommended

Oak, cinnamon, cherries, on the nose. The palate is decidedly medium+ bodied, and the finish is long, generous. That said, this is not something I would seek out, but no doubt there are many that would deeply enjoy this; I wanted more freshness, acidity. Drink now thru 2033. recommended for the style.

Generous, round, lifted, but I'm not finding much to get excited about - today. This riserva is way young, and this address is well known for top quality, so I say revisit in 4-6 years to get a better/proper feel for this wine. That said, the finish is nearly a minute. Drink 2024-2047. recommended+, with upside noted.

Really pretty, red-fruited nose, filled with Tuscan dust, and soil. The palate is a bit generous, but it's well-lifted, and the finish is med+. If earthy can be (is?) sexy, this wine is sexy. Loads of soil notes, with red (mostly) and some darker red fruits. It's a wine I could smell all night. Medium body, plenty of fresh, exciting acidity, and such fine detail all leading to a long, long finish. A true beauty, wow. Drink 2021 (with 2 hours of air) -2045. highly recommended+

Red/dark red fruits, baking and cooking spices, some soil. Medium-bodied, good, fresh acidity, and a med/med+ finish. A nice nose of soil/place, and high-toned fruit. Medium/med+ body, oaky, but also well-lifted. Some warmth creeps into the middle, muddling the initial attack. The finish is creamy, warm, and melted. Not for my palate. Certainly recommended for those that enjoy this style.

Red-fruited, medium-bodied, with loads of varietal/place character. Plenty of oak on the nose, but with some brief swirling, some nice red fruits, too. The palate comes across as pretty heavy-handed in this moment (some may like that). That said, I'd like to revisit this in 3-4 years, to see if there's been a trade - oak for fruit. Nice, but lacks proper acidity for my palate. Still, it can be recommended

Really pretty wound up just now, but also packing a lot of fruit, and acid, too. Mostly resolved, sweet tannins, and a long finish. The structure bodes well for the future; avg+ complexity already. Very easily recommended, drink 2021-2039.

I'm digging the nose, with its herbal flirtations, but the palate is a bit muddled just now. Not sure it's going to find its center. That said, plenty will greatly enjoy the succulent red berry middle, and avg/avg+ final. For the style, I suppose it's recommended

Herbal, some lemon rind, soil. Comlex, med/full body, with good length, and structure - should age pretty well; my only nit is it could have used a touch more acidity to better balance. Drink now thru 2032. recommended

Anteprima Chianti Classico Collection, Florence
A freshly opened bottle that was less than thrilling. Lots of base soil notes at first; just didn't develop as I felt it should. Perhaps a less than perfect bottle. A correct bottle, in say 5-6 more years, should be very good, at least. Based upon past experiences with this producer, this is, at least, recommended

I was hoping to see a few more 2018s, but knowing the quality of the vintage, I agree with many that will let them rest another year before showing them/releasing them to the public. 2019 is a very good vintage, too, fyi.

Anteprima Chianti Classico Collection, Florence med red brick, bright, clear. Slightly reduced, herbal, soil-driven nose. Med/med+ body, with good acidity, but slightly off-center on balance - today, this is obviously very young. Shows good length, depth, though nothing exciting just now. Revisit in a year. Anteprima Chianti Classico Collection, Florence
It's only 1pm here in Florence (in the middle of winter), and yet recent temps have this otherwise very cool building showing at a greatly higher than normal level - thus this wine is showing some more EtOH than others might encounter. That said, the aromas/flavors show decent, average typicity, but I'm wondering if the acids (if at a more ideal temperature) might let this show more/better character? Terrible review, I know, but the best I can do today. To revisit.

Darker brick red, initial aromas pretty limited to oak just now. Classic build/body, good+ typicity of flavors; high acidity, with lurking, deep well of red fruits. I like this, better in 2-4 years, to be sure. Drink 2023-2035.
recommended+, with upside noted.

2018 Podere Poggio Scalette Chianti Classico
Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
(2/18/2020)
Anteprima Chianti Classico Collection, Florence
High-toned red berry fruits. Medium, round, and juicy body. This isn't appealing to me, as I find the build to be a bit blowsy; too easy to enjoy, and one for early consumption. Not to my palate, but most should like this for its gentle, round nature. Drink 2021-2033; I like it for the style, but would not seek it out. recommended

Ripe red berry fruits, some soil, a little oak, and leather on the nose. High-ish acids, good+ build, if a little loose in the mid-palate just now. Give this a few years of rest to better integrate, then drink for another decade+. Solid build, and purity. recommended+, with upside noted.

Darker brick red. Supple, juicy red fruits, with gushing acidity. Stern tannins just now, so give this 3-5 years to begin to see its really colors. For classicists, not modernists. Nice+. recommended+, drink 2024-2039.

2017 Fattoria di Montecchio Chianti Classico
Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
(2/18/2020)
Anteprima Chianti Classico Collection, Florence
Medium, bright brick red, with aromas, and flavors that are already quite approachable, appealing. Generous red fruits, fresh acids, firm, fine tannins. This is a winner, but should see an hour of air if consuming any time soon. Drink 2022-2033. recommended+, with upside noted. Really solid for the vintage.

Darker brick red, with aromas of cinnamon stick, cherry, soil, dust. Loads of fresh acids; juicy, deep. Flavors are consistent with the nose, though I find the structure nodding toward the short/mid term for sure. Good effort, but not something I'd look for. Drink 2020-2026. recommended

** This is for the Gran Selezione Badiola. There are, surprisingly, 2 different GS wines from the same producer in this vintage **

Much more high-toned than the GS from this producer (i.e. non Badiola) tasted just before it. This is OTT for my palate, and is more in the cocktail wine genre. The Caymus of Toscana.
