It's been a few years, but ChrisinCowiche's post on singletons highlighted the fact that I have way too many rattling around in my cellar. Figuratively speaking, mostly, but being in Southern California, periodically they're quite literally rattling.

Anyhow, with no further ado, I bring you the Hallowed (somewhat) Annual Tradition of [drumroll, please]:

Last Puppy Night

Per the description from Khamen in the original event, the following are the rules:

quote:

Simple rule - on Friday 29th of March, (i.e. a week from today) you have to pop a bottle that you only have ONE of in the cellar - whether it's a singleton purchase or a bin end. Whether it's a special bottle or the last of a daily drinker pile is down to you.

Post on this thread what it was and how it was.

Together we can drink our way to a tidier cellar!

Who is in?

K

How you define a "last puppy" is up to you. Don't overthink it! It's just another fun excuse to do what we all love to do anyway: pull some corks and drink some wine!

Can't do it next Friday? No worries. Open a Last Puppy anytime that weekend and post up.

Who's with me?

Here are the prior years' threads:

2012 Edition

2013 Edition

2014 Edition (yes, we missed 2014, because, well... the link sums it up)

2015 Edition

2016 Edition

2017 Edition

2018 Edition

2019 Edition

2020 Edition

2021 - 2023 Editions: 2014, revisited

I'm in! Now just to choose a puppy or three for that weekend...

I'm going to interpret "last puppy" as being a wine I once had more than one of but now only have one of. That actually knocks most of my singletons off the list (especially if I look for something that's been hanging out in storage for a while), but there are definitely still some fun options.

Yes, will need to plan on what to have.

Loads of singletons on hand here. A couple near the end of their Drinking Window, so likely going that way.

Can't wait to see the line-up of what everyone is having.

Started last night with 2009 Rasa QED. I thought that was my oldest Rasa, but CT says I have a 2008 and a 2011 QED, also both last puppies. This was obviously a lost min-vertical of sorts. I'll look for the other two to consume over this weekend. The 2009 was holding up well, if a bit on backside of peak. Dark core of tar with some fruit, and nice long finish. Looking forward to comparing to the other 2.

I also got an early start on next weekend. 2011 Reynvaan Foothills Reserve; savory, earthy goodness. Not a Rocks vineyard, and the signature Rocks funk was indeed absent, but otherwise stylistically falls elegantly in line with everything else they produce.

I've been out of town in Scotland for the last week. I might be late, but I'm going to use this thread as the motivation (or excuse) for the reason we had a 2011 Biondi Santi Brunello tonight. It's the only one I was able to get up on release and I really wasn't saving it for anything special. So why not tonight???

OMG, so good!

I was doing some rearranging in wine storage earlier today and pulled two candidates for the weekend: 2012 Tercero White Hawk Syrah & 2011 Gilbert et Christine Felettig Chambolle-Musigny. There are a couple last puppies hanging out here at the house too which may also end up getting opened this week.

The Felletig is one of my few remaining red Burgs...looks like it's been 5+ years since I bought one, but prices being what they are for even village-level burgs these days, there you go. Probably going to open it with Easter dinner.

I am in -- either something I have in house or this will be a good excuse to head out to the offsite, which needs organizing badly!

I think offsites are always badly in need of organizing. It's kind of fundamental to their nature.

Agreed. I live in Nashville but have 500 plus bottles in storage in downtown Chicago. I try to get there once a year or so to bring some things home and put some younger wines there. Unfortunately, whenever we go to Chicago we are always busy visiting friends and family so we rush through and invariably forget to properly record everything in Cellartracker.

It is!

1986 La Jota Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain. Cork, color and nose are all great upon opening. Quick taste when it hit the decanter is promising. 13.5%. These were the good old days

A really nice bottle with years ahead. Glad the last bottle thread motivated us to drinking it tonight :-)

2008 Rasa Principia Reserve Syrah

First glass rather meh...gritty, no nose, no flavor, 18" legs. Oh...that's right...I spilled it on the fecking floor!

Second glass (now sitting at reasonable distance from my clumsy appendages) is much better.

We were out and about last night, so no last puppy. But tonight we had our last bottle of 1998 Michel Gaunoux Corton- Renardes. Nice wine, drinking at peak.

Inadvertently opened a last puppy - 2013 Soos Creek Stampede Pass. It's a bright fruit take on Merlot, good acidity but not great depth. Think I'll go get a glass!

My Friday got derailed for a variety of reasons, so no last puppy got opened yesterday. However, I just helped finish off our last bottle of 2017 Shale Oak Winery Grenache Blanc, and I have a couple of other bottles on deck for Easter tomorrow.

Easter pre-dinner last puppy bottle: Bodegas Yuste Aurora Amontillado Sherry. We drink dry sherry very rarely, but we're enjoying this while prepping lamb and sides.

Maybe there should be a "First Puppy Night". For those wines that we buy cases of and wonder when we're gonna pop one

Do it!

My last puppy was indeed the 2018 Rasa The Composer Riesling. Good zippy acidity to pair with chicken tikka masala, saag aloo, samosas and pakoras from my favorite Indian restaurant.

I don't drink much Riesling, and every single time I open one, I am reminded that I should really drink more. They're so good.

That sounds like a new thread....

Good job, everyone, cutting down on the cellar clutter by clearing out some last puppies!

Cheers!

Opened to breathe for an hour prior to pouring.

A full-bodied Napa cabernet sauvignon with nice complexity. Red fruits & black berries, some tobacco & earthiness. Medium to light tannins and good mouthfeel.

Should hold up nicely for a few more years.
