OK, we need a new thread, so why not?

What have you purchased this week to drink or to add to your cellar?  I am lucky enough to have my wife's birthday fall on the 17th, so in usual tradition I am treating her to a few wines for her birthday...when in all actuality, we just use birthdays an an excuse to spend more than usual on wine.  LOL!

How about you?  What have you picked up this week?  Did I just open a can of worms?

Hmmm, thats quite a few bottles you purchased this week

I just bought this very old port:

1935 Nicolau de Almeida Porto

Expensive enough for just 1 week, cant say anything about the taste as it will lie down to rest for some years. The color is a kind of whiskey like what i can see. Its a transparent bottle so i have to store it away and not let direct sunlight or artificial light harm it. When the time is ripe i will let the community know what it  tasted like.

Why this thread?

If you want to know what other users are buying (for example, in April, 2007), just ask CT search engine:
http://www.cellartracker.com/list.asp?table=PivotPurchase&Pivot1=Wine&S1=qd&Pivot2=Vintage&PurchaseYear=2007&PurchaseMonth=4&iUserOverride=0&S2=n

CT is wonderful site and it is possible to make even non-standard querries.

It's always fun to learn more about vino so I bought the following mail order and direct from the winery.

  1. 2005 Bergström Pinot Noir de Lancellotti
  2. 2005 Bergström Pinot Noir Cumberland Reserve
  3. 2005 Bergström Pinot Noir Bergström

Rather than just say what -  how about why as well? I have had several of the Bergstroms in the past (pre Cellartracker notes) and have simply enjoyed the deep, rich Oregon Pinot Noir's this smaller producer creates. I am not normally an Oregon Pinot lover and find a lot of the wine from my home country (Oregon that is) overpriced and not very well balanced. Bergstrom has given me faith in Oregon. These wines are nearly impossible to find in Seattle and therefore, I bit the bullet and purchased direct. If you see these wines in your neck of the woods, I recommend you grab a couple and prove me right or wrong. I find them simply to be tasty and well made.

I concur. If anyone's curious about what others are buying, they'll get a much better picture from a query than this thread. I think it's a gross waste of bandwidth, and amounts to babble with, for some, a strong element of bragadocio...

My cellar needed Pinot Noirs, so I headed out to Sonoma and Napa to correct this.  I visited Landmark, Kenwood, Caymus, Clos du Val, Regusci, Chimney Rock, Pine Ridge, and Dariousch.
I love the 2005 Grand Detour Pinot from Landmark! ...and bought some nice 2003 Rutherford Cabernet at Pine Ridge.
Other bottles were odds and ends including some big bottles of Cab!

What have we bought this week you ask...? AGLIANICO. I have discovered 2 new estates from Campania, Italy. Vuolo and Selvanova. Vuolo is from Colli di Salerno and Selvanova is from Terre del Volturno. Terre del Volturno is where you can find the estate of Galardi's Terre del Volturno at $100-$130 per bottle. The beauty is Selvanova cost about $35.00 - $40.00 and is a better wine.

Clean, structured, tannic like Aglianico should be and huge fruit not huge wood. The tannins are teeth coating like a huge wave of tannins across your teeth. The difference between wood tannins and tannins that coat your teeth is the wood tannins are felt in the back of the mouth where tannins from the fruit is felt at the teeth.

These two estates each received 92 points from Daniel Tomases (not that we care about ratings). I think they would have warranted more if the tannins where toned down a bit but Daniel tasted the wines upon first release. Having tasted these wines later they are much better and will be even better for years to come. Leave them out on the counter for a day or two. No problem. They get even better.

Vuolo exports 20-25 cases for the whole USA. A true vin de garage. This is even difficult to find in Italy. Selvanova is about 400 cases per year.

Selvanova's yields are so low they produce one bottle per vine. This translates to less than four pounds of grapes per vine. Huge extraction. This is though an iron fist in a velvet glove.

If anyone cares for Aglianico, go for these wines. They can be found in NY and NJ only. These two are the best no doubt.

Bought last weekend:
1983 Cos d'Estournel
1990 Bourree Clos de la Roche

We've already drunk one of the Cos, quite gentle and nice and perfectly aged.

But the real pleasant surprise of the week was:
1999 Massa Vecchia Terziere, an off-list special at a restaurant last night. Label says "Alicante di Maremma Toascana", IGT. Who can tell me anything about this wine? (Of course I already know the most important thing, which is how nice it was to drink...)

Strange that some think this thread is a waste of bandwidth - and then post on it!
Seemed an OK question to me.
These were my last two purchases*:
  • 2001 Quinta do Vale Dona Maria Douro
  • 2004 Quinta do Vale Dona Maria Douro
and so that I can post something that isn't available elsewhere, this is what I will buy next:
    2005 Viña Almaviva S.A. Almaviva
    and am considering/searching for:
2003 Concha y Toro Carmenère Carmín de Peumo

    L.

    * not Bordeaux!!!

    Purchases this week:

06 Kim Crawford Sauv Blanc (along with every other person on the planet)
    05 Bodegas Castano Monastrell
04 Finca El Reposo Malbec (Argentina)
    06 Librandi Ciro Bianco (Italy)
05 Perrin et Fils Cotes du Rhone Blanc
99 Quilceda Creek (haven't told my wife about that one yet, shhhh!)

Five to drink and one to cellar.  Not bad for one week.

A nice benefit of this thread is that I discover there is a wine - called 1999 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon - that everyone likes.
Well everyone except Eric http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=372 !
Suspect his must have been a bad bottle.

With this many great wines to discover I think I'd better start drinking more ;)

I was fortunate to be able to drink a 2002 Quilceda Creek Cab last year.  A remarkable wine (Wine Advocate (Pierre Rovani) 100 pts).  Perhaps even more remarkable: I had it in a New York City restaurant (Veritas) for $180.

    Two weeks ago I bought:

    2003 Dominus
    2000 Croix de Labrie
    1995 Cos d'Estournel
    2005 Two Hands Lily's Garden
2003 Robert Keenan Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Spring Mountain
    2003 Numanthia

and this week I'm picking up:

    2004 Joseph Phelps Insignia
2001 E. Guigal Hermitage Ex Voto
2001 E. Guigal Hermitage Ex Voto Blanc
    2002 Verite La Joie
2005 Alonso del Yerro Maria Ribera del Duero

Oh great.  One more person to fight over the rare bottle of QC.  I knew I should have kept my mouth shut.  ;)

I figure the 99 or 00 will probably be the last vintage I can afford.  Maybe the 01, but it wasn't long after that the prices went totally berserk.  03 is insane.

    and
  • 2004 Viña Almaviva S.A. Almaviva
  • 2003 Viña Almaviva S.A. Almaviva

plus a couple more 2006 Bordeaux, that were bearable prices:
  • 2006 Château Calon-Ségur

Was impressed with Almaviva tasted at Decanter's New World Wine Encounter in May but haven't bought since.  Not so much what I've bought but more what I've drunk this week - an 8 vintage vertical of Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay with the founder, Denis Horgan.  Fantastic [white] wines and a great if somewhat long evening http://www.cellartracker.com/event.asp?iEvent=3702

I bought a few bottles of the 04 Isole e Olena "Cepparello" and I opened a bottle of 04 Chappellet Vineyard Mountain Cuvée which i thought was really good for a $20-25 daily drinker.  So I stand to pick up a few more of those.  And although I didn't buy them this week I have a few bottles of 03 Morazzano Montescudaio Re Rosso, 01 Morazzano Brunello di Montalcino, and 04 Morazzano Ribuio that I think should be delivered soon judging from the drop in temperatures on the Mid-Atlantic region.

    Paul,
"Fantastic [white] wines and a great if somewhat long evening"
How can an evening tasting fine wines be "somewhat long"?   ;)
Thanks for the positive on Almaviva.
I've now collected 1997 thru' 2005 and laid them away.
(Part of my campaign to discover great wines that aren't Bordeaux and more importantly, don't cost what fine Bordeaux cost nowadays).
Paid on average 26.70 pounds IB for each bottle.
So by my calculation they just have to be as good as Calon Segur 2006.

    Colonel,

It was somewhat long on the basis I got home about 2.30am ish, having started at 5.30pm and was up around 7.00am the next morning.  The actual evening wasn't 'long', it was the next day (or two) which perhaps I should have said were.

It's turning into a heavy month with lots of corporate stuff so have been buying more of the following.
    2005 Zenato Lugana San Benedetto
2001 Campogiovanni (San Felice) Brunello di Montalcino
    2005 Glaetzer Shiraz The Bishop
2004 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series

As well as Leeuwin Arts Series Riesling, Saltram #1, 2003 Sassicaia (to go with the single bottle vertical collection I have) and 2004 Leeuwin Arts Series for myself.

I've had all of the above 'corporate wines' several times and they're excellent wines and sensible prices for the quality.

    Wrighty

    Paul,
Sounds more like a St. Andrews Ball, that I remember from Asia, than a wine tasting.
    Rather jealous!
I've just bought 2000 Château Croix de Labrie from Farr for 450 pounds a case against list price of 700!
With RP pts of 95 feeling rather pleased with myself.
Haggling with two dealers over 2006 Amon Ra that I learnt about on CT.
    Cheers,
    L.

    Colonel,
It was a good night, probably not to be repeated soon.  Had Glaetzer Heartland white over the weekend and pretty good considering it was less than GBP10 in HK.  The Glaetzer wines seem to be one to start collecting, believe he was the wine make of the Black Pepper E&E which I like so bodes well.  Good luck with the haggling.

Acquired 2005 and 2006 Amon Ra.
Now looking at Kay Brothers Amery Vineyards from 2004.
My Aussie collection is beginning to look like a little cellar now:
24 different wines from 5 producers (Two Hands, Kay Bros, Glaetzer, Whoop Whoop, Standish and Torbreck), 2003-2006, nine rated above 95 pts by RP, and 19 above 90 CT pts.
And best of all the average price about 18 pounds a bottle (IB), whereas my Bordeaux wines cost an average of  exactly twice that!

    2001 Château Grand Corbin-Despagne
    1978 Château Haut-Brion
