This week was part II of a 2006 vintage Austrian Wachau collection I have started. Supposed to be an insane vintage so I thought about next summer and some for cellaring. These are things ready in 2-3 years but that can certainly go longer. Notes are not mine. A few bottles of each: Riesling Setzberg Smaragd Delicate and minerally, brisk citrus – understated, elegant and just very charming. Riesling Hochrain Smaragd Magnums Exuberant, layered and complex; what is extraordinary is that everything sings together instead of collapsing into a cacophony. Peaches, apricots, nuts, herbs, and minerality to spare. Mind boggling. Riesling Singerriedel Smaragd Slightly more reserved than Hochrain; a quiet beauty of a wine that is finely detailed with impressive depth and extreme purity. Gruner Veltliner Honivogl Smaragd Simply one of the pinnacles of the Gruner Veltliner grape. This wine is famous for its gloriously creamy texture, balance and longevity.
