bought a case and drank a bottle, a most unusual wine: https://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=2534599 2012 Recaredo Cava Intens Rosat Brut Nature Gran Reserva 92 Points Bought as a follow up to the first wine served us during our tour of Recaredo in January, and an object lesson in the power of setting to enhance the enjoyment of wine. That noted, the wine itself is delicious, tasting exactly as one should expect from its constituent parts and its winemaking. Monestrell, garnacha, and pinot noir, skins exposed for a few hours, 4 or so years on the lees, no dosage. So, this is proper rose (not saignee) wine from the land of taut, blisteringly fresh whites, aged as a gran reserva, and resealed undosed. Which is to say produced uncompromisingly, so it better be good. And so it is, even my kabinett-loving family admired and enjoyed this wine, both in Penedes and at home, especially with sympathetic food (last night, beef stirfry). My primary impression is of the aroma and flavors of a totally dry and very light red wine, married with the penetrating texture of GR Cava, so compared with its relatives, much more flavorful (Intens...) than most, while retaining the rigorous clarity and lightness. When we visited Recaredo had already torn out the vines and was replanting with xerello and macabeo because they feel this vineyard is too good to use for any but these most suitable Cava varieties; their future roses will be made in the the Champagne-traditional "red-wine-added" manner, and 2012 is the final vintage.
