I knew that keeping these guys around was a good idea. This wine is in a REALLY good spot tonight. A flavor profile VERY similar to their next door neighbor but this wine is a crazy cuvee of 88% Cab, 5% Merlot, 3% Malbec, 2% PV and 2% St. Macaire. Wins the "black cork" award! This wine has power, is very thick on the palate, yet elegant in places. IMO probably not even ready to go just yet. Decanted for an hour. POWERFUL blackberry and vanilla nose. The entry still has some oaked character. Tobacco to the middle with powerful blackberry, some dark chocolate, mint, herbal. The finish was baking spice kind of spicy, still quite tannic with good acidity. This wine is a stand-alone stunner. Probably still five years away from a true pop and pour. Delicious!

Informal dinner, no detailed notes. I love how most of the 2014 Napa Cabs are showing these days: ready to drink and less flesh, ripeness and concentration than the 2013s or 2015s. With a good amount of acidity this makes them very balanced and enjoyable at such an early stage while many 2013s seem not yet tamed and ready and the 2015s have often too much baby fat and an overwhelming concentration. This 2014 O’Shaughnessy is no exception: layers of ripe (and rather red) fruit (cherries), violets and minerality in the background embedded in a cool, classic frame with velvety tannins and a perfect acidity. Points deducted for the medium- complexity and delineation. For the elusive 95+ category I missed that special "something". Nevertheless, a very good wine which brings a lot of joy. This wine got roughly one hour in the decanter which seems about right.

Purple fruit - blackberry, dark currants, dark raspberry, and dark cherry. Smooth mid-palate with nice depth/concentration. Rich flavors of dark berries, some spice, and a little mineral component. Decent finish but not overly long nor deep. Decanted for two hours and drank over another three. Improved with time but drinking pretty well after the decant. However, I believe this vintage will benefit from some more time (another year or two) to let the fruit soften and open-up a little more which is no surprise in light of its youth and quality of fruit. 79% cabernet sauvignon and the rest a blend of malbec, merlot, cabernet franc, carmenère, petit verdot, and St. Macaire.

Ummm, ummmm, good! Pnp prior to burgers for dinner, maybe a 92-93. Right from the start, power from the nose and the palate.....jammy, dense cassis in spades! Rich, ripe dark berry fruit, some smokey barrel char and spice. One hour in and everything comes together in better proportion and integration, maybe a 94, but in the 2nd hour it backs off and tightens up a bit, more fennel(?) appears. Fast forward to 4 hours later so 6 hours of air total and this is a real beauty....power and sophistication in one. Nose of classic violets and lead pencil, palate of dark red cherry, raspberry fruit and lingering Chinese 5 spice throughout. It has all come together with a little chalky minerality lending a silky smooth feel to the mouth and it's a 95 in my book given the extended mouth watering finish with just the right amount of acidity. It is amazing how good so many '14s, (thought by many upon release to be the weak link in the glory years of '12 through '16) are now out performing every other vintage, at least in my book. It is perfectly rounded and balanced, with 6 hours of air.

ps....Carol's scoring is in reverse of mine, as she's nothing but a fruit whore and loved the overwhelming cassis up front in that first hour after opening. Her score is 95 at the pnp down to a 93 after 6 hours of air. Obviously, she is wrong.

1st btl of a 6er and decanted for 2 hours. A dark brooding nose of blackberry, cassis and cedar tones lead way towards a massive full bodied, layered, dark fruited and mineral driven wine with searing tannins that soften up on the long flavorful finish. A killer wine with awesome potential, a 95+ at present from me but I am going to wait a couple of more years until my next btl.

WineLA event: Bordeaux vs. Cabernet tasting (Los Angeles, CA): Tasted blind. This was the crowd's WOTN by an overwhelming 50% or so. New world nose and very seductive. Tight and tannic but a very round finish that packs a punch. A total stunner.

I'm getting the typical notes of Howell Mountain fruit-forward, jammy black currant, deep rich chocolate, toasted red cherries, and delicious herbal finish. This is singing!

This is one of the best Cabs I have ever had. It's big...real big and dense. It's young so make sure to decant for several hours. Someone mentioned Togni in another review. I agree completely. I loved the 2009 but the 2010 O'shaughnessy is definitely a step above. The finish is unbeatable. In 5 years, I think this will be a 97 or higher. I have 5 bottles left. I hope I have enough restraint to hold onto them.

Boy am I glad that most of these bottles are in offsite storage!!! This wine is fantastically coming into its element. Poured a deep, dark violet color into the glass. Cork with 7-8mm of cork bleed. Wine was poured into the glass, rather frothy, with a bouquet of jasmine, violet, dark black fruits. Very pungent nose. The entry is a wine that reminds me of an old world wine -- although it is elegant, full bodied, and fruit forward, there is a definite granite/crushed rock note in the middle of this wine that integrates the front and finish of this wine quite nicely. The middle has a hodge podge of fruit, flowers and flint. The finish is stiff --- very harsh enamel ripping tannin (even after two hours of decanting) that will take probably 10 years to soften and iron out. This wine easily is good through 2025, but probably won't start heading down the hill until closer to 2030, and probably done a few years after that.

Wonderful. We unfortunately did not have good stems at the restaurant, but even with the thick rimmed glass, this wine was amazing. Drank alongside a 2010 Cameron Fisher. The 2009 O'Shaughnessy Howell was in a great place, mostly black and blue fruit with the oak present, but so well integrated, amazing mid and finish was a good minute long. Drank over 2 hours and just got better with time, and no hints of any green notes. This bottle is a treat, but still has plenty of time so no rush to drink. Tasting notes 10/24/14 by Wink are spot on!!

Just drinking so well right now. Has the stuffing or structure to last for a long time but don't hesitate to enjoy. Continues to be one of our go to wines and the consistency through vintages is amazing. Funny (not) how this price point used to be considered high, now for this quality it's considered a good QPR. Times are changing in Napa. The number of wines over $150 is amazing.

Tasted among six other premium Napa cabs. This one just slightly lost out to the Insignia, and tied the Padrone in my mind.
A delicious wine, the vast array of fruit that went into it appeared to help create a wine with substantial complexity for the price of the bottle.
Fruit forward bouquet, with red cherries shining through. Very smooth in the mouth, nice long finish, velvety one could say. I would appreciate a touch more acidity in the wine, and perhaps a bit more of a velvet feel perhaps adding more Cab Franc could do that). All in all a superb wine for price, easy drinking with nice complexity. Well done.

At this price point I would say it’s unrivalled with any wine I have tasted. Simply put it’s an outstanding wine possessing amazing red fruit, structure, acidity, finish, and balance.

This bottle was noticeably better than the first one. It's really coming together nicely, the future looks good for this wine. Drank with a filet mignon dinner. I recommend drinking this within 4 hours of opening. Can't wait to open another Mt. Veeder.

Dark in color, full bodied, powerful, concentrated wine with a dusty, earthy, black fruit, smoke, licorice nose. There is good fatness to the wine, finishing with juicy, blackberries, blue fruit and chocolate. This should rest for at least a few years, to soften the tannins and bring things further together.

Multiple tastings with consistent notes. Nice Howell Mountain fruit, strong aromatics, needs some cellar time, should only improve with age. Excellent wine at this price point, perhaps this wine is a hidden gem for now.

Decanted for 4+ hours before serving, this wine is bright ruby in color and revealed very expressive notes of black cherry, blueberry, eucalyptus and tobacco. The mouth feel was very juicy with borderline sweet tannins, hints of mint and cigar box. The finish was long and complex, with added notes of red currant, anise and more red fruits that lingered for 45+ seconds.

Culled from a friend's cellar at a recent tasting of Howell Mountain Cabs, this wine is ready to drink now with a thorough decant. It was really expressive and will probably continue to improve. This is an excellent wine.

I believe this is probably the highest rating I've ever given a wine. The crazy thing is that - this wine is JUST NOW in the drinking window and, although possessing many characteristics of an aged, refined wine is still just a BABY. This wine will be a 98 in 2-3 years, and then who knows after that. This wine was decanted through a Vinturi into a decanter and sat for about an hour. Enjoyed with an Italian meat loaf. The initial waft out of the decanter was blackberry jam, and I could just smell the spice. The wine poured into a glass and with a very heavy light could barely permeate the density of this wine, which was really quite phenomenal for an 08 Cab. Legs on the glass were quite intense. When the wine went down - wow. OK, now I'll get crucified for saying this now and still giving this one a 96 - this is not a traditional california cab by any stretch of the imagination. There is absolutely zero smoke, leather, tobacco, or mineral notes on the wine and the tannins were not very stiff either without or with food. (with food, tannins are completely attenuated). The front of the palate is all blackberry pie. Rich, dense, full, velvet. Oak barrel carried this blackberry pie to the mid-palate, where black pepper spice characteristics dominated. Now, the pepper spice took about two hours to fully develop. The finish of the wine is full, velvet, rich, oaky, and still quite a bit mature with blackberry and blueberry balance with some fig, and a hint of dark chocolate and pepper spice that carried this wine to a 30+ second finish. I give this a 96 now based on the fact that the wine is so perfectly balanced and integrated. IMO this would be my ABSOLUTE favorite if the oak was a little more present, tannins were more polished and refined, and the wine had the presence of leather, tobacco, or mineral that made me fall in love with CA Cabs. In 2-3 years once this wine starts to develop - - - I can only imagine. It drinks like a Cab/Syrah 60/30 blend with 10 percent Malbec, but it's really 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 4% Malbec, 3% St. Macaire, 2% Carmenere, 2% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot. The other 21 percent Cab will dominate as this beauty ages.

opaque, purple and inky, gave this a few hours of air in the bottle, a burst of cedar, sage, wet gravel and violets show on the nose, big and powerful with nice supporting acid, the palate is dry, red cherry, dark berry, cocoa bean, cola, mineral and fresh herbs make up complex nuances, the finish hangs on for a while, serious Howell Mountain cabernet with the makeup to last a long time in the cellar, steakhouse wine

O'Shaughnessy is the most consistent winery that I have ever tasted. This effort is just great! Dark blue and purple in the glass -- blueberry and blackberry with chocolate. Very smooth. No need to decant -- this can be enjoyed right away.

Struggled on a score, but everyone loved this, so went with 98 instead of 97, 2008 is proving to be very very underrated for Howell Mountain.

Wow, what an education. Decanted half the bottle, taking a glass as I was pouring -- great nose, terrific, deep, complex aroma that reminded me of the 2009 Lagune. Initial sips were out of this world but also weirdly disjointed - like flipping too quickly through a novel. I could catch brief sensations of deep fruit and an almost Washingtonian funk, and then the wall o tannins came in. 3 hours later, it wasn't that great, honestly. I kept getting cranberry and I wondered if it was my taste buds that were off. Then: second day. Fantastic. Just mellowed, integrated, long and lingering and exciting, not unlike Larkmead, only deeper somehow. This might be one of the best California cabernets I've had. Perhaps needless to say, I'll be waiting some time before drinking the next one.

This is by no means a description of the potential of this wine, rather an assessment of where it is now. It lacks the complexity that will come with age. I have 10 bottles left, and going to lay them down for another year. It is a very good wine with obvious prospects to be great.

Seems to be a little closed down right now but still a great wine nonetheless. Bold bold fruit of blackberries, cassis, and plums. Great mouth feel to it with many complex notes of mocha, fresh herbs, leather, and toasty oak. Grippy tannins with a long finish. Still very tight right now, needs to sit a couple years, will only get better.

Already showing sediment on the shoulder. Surprised I actually had any of these left. This bottle is starting to get there, but honestly is still about 5 years from being "there". Bottle decanted for 2 hours. Nose is brambly blackberry and fig. Front is earthy blackberry, tobacco. Middle is where fig starts to creep in. Finishes dry....very strong tannin but with an excellent condensed blackberry backbone. O'Shaughnessy and their neighbor Cimarossa both seem to be medium + bodied with blueberry and blackberry when released but within 5 years tend to turn to "the dark side" with a nice full bodied and slightly chalky mouthfeel. Great bottle shared tonight with family.
