Phlipponnat really excelled in 2004. This is a complete, highly complex wine with a lot of vigor and a superb balance. To me, it‘s better than their 2002 or 1996, at least for now, which says a lot. 95+pts TN: The nose presents an intriguing bouquet of honey and yellow fruits, interwoven with lots of minerality, subtle notes of herbs, and a whisper of smoke. Superb. On the palate, the wine reveals a wonderful roundness and good freshness to create a great balance. Superb yellow and white fruits, delicate floral hints, pronounced minerality, and a nuanced nuttiness, complemented by a touch of brioche. Undoubtedly the most complex and precise wine in the lineup, it is a complete expression from A to Z, exhibiting remarkable persistence. Medium + intensity of aromas. Palate adds ripe pear, ripe white peach, ripe watermelon, fresh tarragon and limestone. Great bitterness throughout. Seemed less sweet, less candyfloss character, though with the same tinged pinkness. Terrific. If I buy more of this, I'm happy. If it's like the last bottle, I'd be thinking I'm at the county fair grounds with a bad recipe. The bubbles were similar, the mousse saved integration and balance were all in place. Yaaay! I was enjoying this before the food came, but it was even more satisfying as an accompaniment to the amuse-bouches, especially a tiny tart with trout roe -- a perfect, uplifting harmony of wine and food. Lot of amplitude and fat on the midpalate. Should get more layered with aging. It feels like the underlying fruit was appropriately ripe. Together with the medium dosage (by todays standards) this lends a nougat-like quality. Acidity is medium minus. Clos des Goisses is a famed long ager.
