Black cherries, herbs, spice, and licorice come together in the nose. The palate is medium-bodied, vibrant, sweet, and juicy, with a nice lift in the red plum finish. Drink from 2026-2040. 91-93 Pts.

92-94 Punkte.

Drunk in a restaurant in Brussels where I was amazed to find such a venerable bottle on the list, otherwise populated by the usual array of infant wines. At €80 relativley a bargain as well. No formal notes taken, but this was stupendously good; velvety, rich and distinctively different from the usual run of even quite expensive restaurant wines. Still has plenty of life left and only improved over the course of the meal.

Mörkt röd och tät. Tanninrik. Det finns en dämpad elegans här, men jag skulle säga att vinet passerat pik och frukten är på tillbakagång vilket gör att syra och tanniner gör att helheten inte är 100% balanserad. Men fortfarande en mycket bra bordeaux.

Cabernet and friends: Plum and milk chocolate aromas. This is still a bit tight and could do with another 5 years or so in the cellar, al dente tannins with good acid spine, dark plums and earth notes. Lovely.

Cabernet and friends: Dark plums primarily on the nose. In comparison to the 2010 that was tasted alongside, the 2009 is considerably more open, with a generously fruited midpalate of plum, a whisp of tannins remain, and good length. In a good spot at the moment.

Medium/full-bodied, fresh, soft and silky, the wine requires just a little effort to entice all of its black cherries, plums, chocolate, espresso and licorice to come to the front of the perfume. Vibrant, with ample, sweet, ripe, lush fruits with a dose of salt that adds to the wines character. Polished lively and long, with sweetness and purity to the fruits that linger, this is the best vintage of La Serre I have ever tasted. Drink from 2024-2045.

26022023 - 5 ⭐️ luncheon hosted by SKT with 14 bottles of wines & 2 aged cognacs. Our 2nd round of 4 bottles tasted blind curated by SKT. Horizontal 2010 from 4 great producers. My fab red of the day which I initially guesses as Bordeaux Blend from Napa. Delicious & brooding dark cherries, vanilla, creme de cassis, some game & undertones of dark spices at the background. This has great layers and texture, providing a fleshy but yet juicy tannins. Well balanced throughout the palate with elongate finish

16x Right Bank Bordeaux 1998: Almost 25 years later, it’s a great time to check in on the wines of the much lauded right bank vintage. All wines tasted single blind. A few observations: A) most wines showed quite open with a melted tannin structure, but still good tension across the board. B) The highlight was rather on the structural side (elegance and finesse in most wines), than on the aromatic depth side, which was limited, also due to… C) …the fact that there is limited tertiary expression yet. Most wines will need at least another 5 to rather 10 years to reach their peak. D) An average rating of 91.9pts in my book and 92.0pts for the group shows that despite a few highlights, the reception was mixed overall. E) Best wines today were Angelus (group average 94.9pts), Valandraud (94.4) and Cheval Blanc (94.0). I would put L’Evangile (rated 95pts) in the top category too but the group (average 92.6) was less enthusiastic.

TN: Dark berries, minerality, herbs, hints of tobacco and forest floor on the very fresh and chiseled nose. On the palate, this is very fresh and round with fine dark and dark red berries, herbs and minerality. Medium complexity only but quite well defined. The tannins are fine, well-rounded, good acidity, fresh and light. A bit on the leaner side of thing on the palate. Missing a bit of maturity and roundness but promising. The nose showed better than the palate, which is quite lean. 91/92 pts.

Decanting: Decanted for 2-3 hours which worked well.

Group score: 90.6
Group rank: 12th out of 16 reds

Bordeaux Right Bank 1998 tasting (Essenz (Brugg)): Bordeaux right bank 1998 tasting. All wines were served single blind and were decanted several hours. The sample showed i/ generally healthy and structured wines, still quite primary with further aging potential; ii/ the overall performance was below expectations considering the repute of the vintage for the right bank (although this may be due to the very long aeration), iii/ top wine for me were 1. Valandrau (95), 2. L’Evangile (95), 3. Angélus (94) while for the group the ranking was 1. Angélus (94.9), 2. Valandrau (94.4), 3. Cheval Blanc (94.0). Complete list including group scores included in the tasting story.

Tasting note:
A meaty complexity, well-defined red and dark cherry, only faint aging note in the distance, elements of spice and herbs. A decent amount of power behind all of it. The palate was fresh and juicy, plenty of structure with youthful vibrancy and still pretty mouth-coating tannin. Solid.

1998 Horizontal Bordeaux Right Bank Tasting (private) (Essen'z): All wines were tasted single blind and were decanted before tasting. 14 right bank bordeaux and 2 pirates. All wines were from the vintage 1998.

General observations:
Unfortunately, the tasting was below my expectations. The was no real "wow-effect" at any wines as I had with the left bank tasting 1982-1990 we had a year ago. So I had to find out, that, me, personally, I like more the aged left than the aged right banks. In the end, Ridge Montebello (pirate) ended even up being the wine of the night for me.

_______

TN:
on the bouquet typical bordeaux nose with cigar box, black fruits, tobacco, compact and fresh, precise

on the palate a lot of tension, a little drying tannins, on the nose better than on the palate, rather long

Medium garnet in glass, Thin skin of Merlot ages nicely
Medium+ intensity on nose. Violets, red currant, cherry, red plum, black plum, smoke, charred wood, tobacco, savory. This wine is clearly developing.
Palate is dry, medium+ acidity, medium but integrated tannins, high alc. resulting in Medium+ body. Flavor intensity medium: cherry, red plum, herbaceous, cedar, vanilla, mushroom. Medium plus finish.
Outstanding wine: Can drink now but potential for more aging.

This wine is "dry", which somewhat confusingly means that it's slightly sweet (22g/L of residual sugar). This, combined with fairly low acidity, means that it's not very interesting but would probably be a good crowd pleaser or spritz mixer.
