2001 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de BèzeChambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru Pinot Noir more |
4/21/2024 - Blair Curtis wrote: 96 pointsSuper wine. In a lineup of other vintages of Rousseau CdB (served with 2000, 2012 and 2017), the most interesting comparison for me with this one was the 2000. Striking similarities, but the 2000 was more fully ready and a wee bit less structured. The 2001 was more masculine and virile (some tasters said they would continue to cellar this wine). Powerful CdB but the 23 years of aging brought forth so much wonderful complexity too. It was my only bottle, but this was surely the right event to open it and share. |

4/21/2024 - Blair Curtis wrote: 93 pointsThis is really drinking well now. Perfect combination of (early) mature notes blending seamlessly with the youthful vigor and acid of 2008. This was better than I hoped at this stage. Really fine with food. I'll look to drink my other bottles of this over the next 3-5 years. |

4/21/2024 - Blair Curtis wrote: 92 pointsThis was delicious. In a very good place right now. Gorgeous nose. Notes of maturity, but buttressed by snappy fresh acids (typical of 2008). Nice fruit. Enjoyed this in a small 2008 Chevillon horizontal, which featured 3 of his big boys - the LSG, Vaucrains, and Cailles. Those wines were a step up, but the Bouss was no slouch either! And all 4 wines showed a family character that was very appealing. No hurry on these - 5 more years won't change a thing (at least not in any negative direction). But also no shame at all to drink now. |

3/24/2024 - Blair Curtis wrote: 94 pointsThis wine is still young (of course) and has decades left to age and develop, if you wish to go that route. But to my delight, this wine is quite drinkable now in a youthful way. It does show a smidge of oak now...the integration of which might be one reason to wait on opening bottles for at least another 5 years. But this wine is a big boy. A lot of very high quality material here. Deep and dark, as one might expect. Mouthfeel was exceptional. Opened on the heels of many other great bottles of Champagne and Burgundy, so probably got less of my attention than I should have devoted. I'll age my remaining bottles of this - could prove to be a showstopper down the road! |

2011 Arnaud Ente Meursault Clos des AmbresChardonnay more |
3/24/2024 - Blair Curtis wrote: 94 pointsGorgeous wine. Shows Meursault typicity, but leans towards the Coche side of the Meursault archetype. Since January I have had the chance to taste the 2014 of this wine, and now the 2011. Both vintages were exceptional and both (served blind) evoked guesses of Coche. There is a starting whiff of that struck matchstick. Good racy structure, but combined with hints of maturity and an appropriate touch of Meursault fatness. Ente is one of the now-culty Meursault producers that I have little experience tasting. But based on these recent bottles, I can see why Ente is deservedly up there with Coche, Roulot, Lafon etc. |

2010 Domaine Francois Lamarche Clos VougeotClos Vougeot Grand Cru Pinot Noir more |
3/24/2024 - Blair Curtis wrote: 93 pointsThis started out with a deep-pitched musky masculinity. Really Gevrey-like out of the gate with iron, game blood, and dark fruit - but not even a touch overripe. As the air got at the wine for a few hours, the wine changed quite a bit. It got lighter on its feet and opened up quite a bit and some wonderful red fruit joined the party (though at all times this remained a powerful Clos Vougeot). A wine made in a throwback style - and I really like it a lot. Was a very fine partner to a grilled striploin. |

3/24/2024 - Blair Curtis wrote: 88 pointsNot nearly as bad as I feared. I generally despise 2011 red Burgs. This one opened from cellar temp with a classic green 2011 nose. But the palate was much better - showing less green and more delicious fruit...but with an acid streak reminiscent of 2008, and some ashy finish that you also see on 2011 reds. After letting this air out and warm up, the nose blossomed and the green factor diminished (but never disappeared). The palate became pretty darn good - I was surprised in a good way. When I visited Meo in 2013, it was my impression that they had done very well with this horrible vintage. This bottle was proof of that over 10 years later. |

3/10/2024 - Blair Curtis wrote: 90 pointsClassic nose of smoke, meat, game blood, and fresh herbs. At this stage the fruit has taken a step back - the wine shows as elegant, classic, and a tad reserved. But it is a poised and stately wine showing firm acids, crunchy red and black fruit - some blackberry. Touch of licorice. White pepper. Tree bark. Should do well at the table...I am about to grill a prime strip, so I'll find out! |

3/1/2024 - Blair Curtis wrote: 93 pointsStill lots of gas in the tank...but of all the vintages of this wine I own, I think it was the right call to look in on 2012 young. There was a bit more generosity and roundness (my friend said this one had aspects of a nice Burg). But make no mistake - this is still a powerful and young Cru Barolo with chalky tannins galore. Enjoyed with some rich Italian foods. |

3/1/2024 - Blair Curtis wrote: 92 pointsBought many years ago when my tastes were different. Glad I let this age. Turned out quite nicely - toned down a lot with age. Still alive and kicking, and a nice pairing with a thick cut striploin steak! Had this up against its sibling - the '02 Turley Hayne Petite...they were both nice, but the Zin was just a bit better. |

2/24/2024 - Blair Curtis wrote: 93 pointsDrinking really well now. Touch of rusticity, but boy does this deliver the goods with sappy ripe fruit, snappy acids, sous bois...delish. Deep, but not overly rich - an excellent example of 2008. Not much more you need to wait on, I think...at 15.5 years on, this is in fine form now! My dining companion who is in the wine biz said that if he had bottles of this he would want to drink them soon so they would be sure to show like this one. I take his point, though if you have these I don't think you need to rush. Should hold like this and drink well for a nice while, I'd guess. |

2/17/2024 - Blair Curtis wrote: 92 pointsPop and pour - when still cellar temp, immediate and glorious nose of blood, game meat and pepper. Leafy underbrush. On the palate at first, dark red fruits. Crisp acids when cool. As it warms it becomes more generous. Excellent, but never great. A little weak in the midpalate. Great blackberry fruit comes forward. Bit of star anise and Earl Grey tea. Nice fresh acids. Medium finish. If served blind, would likely guess 1er Cru Gevrey. Not obviously Grand Cru weight. But still an excellent wine. |

1/14/2024 - Blair Curtis wrote: 92 pointsDelicious. It seems to me that a lot of 2013 red Burgs are delivering right now. This wine had a gorgeous nose showing ripe fruit and leafy complexity. On the palate, crunchy red fruits - cranberries and lightly-ripened red cherries. Plus some delightful forest hints and a bit of baking spice. Delicate, but showing underlying power. Excellent acids. Good finish. One might wish for a little more vigor in the midpalate, but overall a very fine and fabulously enjoyable wine. |

2006 Domaine Parent Pommard 1er Cru Les ChaponnièresPinot Noir more |
1/10/2024 - Blair Curtis wrote: 89 pointsFirst bottle from a 6-pack bought nearly 10 years ago. I see that Bill Nanson reported that this wine is made up of some grapes from 50 year old vines and some from 70 year old vines (all situated near Rugiens, but with different soil composition). At this stage this is still a large-scaled Pommard. The fruit is strong, but on opening (and for about 1.5 hours) there was a certain dry woody tannin that was distracting and impacted the mouthfeel. With food, this issue was somewhat mitigated. But even better was the time open - the later glasses after about 2 hours felt more integrated - that woodiness seemed to come down a notch. For this one I recommend a good decant of 90 mins or so. I think this has lots of time left and could well improve with further cellaring. Very good. |

2004 Gaston Chiquet Champagne Premier Cru Millésime OrChampagne Blend more |
1/1/2024 - Blair Curtis wrote: 90 pointsShowing some age and development, but still quite enjoyable. It depends what you want from Champagne. If you are looking for fresh, bright Champagne, then this is likely "past prime" for you. If you cellar and age Champagne to get that mushroom and bready complexity...this wine has arrived. That said, this bottle was my first from a 6-pack - in hindsight I should have had one or two bottles a few years back. I did taste the wine in its youth, and liked it very much - so probably should have gotten into my own 6-pack earlier to see the development over the years. |

1/1/2024 - Blair Curtis wrote: 94 pointsDelicious. Nice acid, and complex fruit flavours. Some blood and funk - - black olive - very typical (except no obvious pepper). Youthful, but at a stage where drinking is quite enjoyable. I suspect this will stay open and ready for some years from now. Enjoy for the next 10 years. |

1/1/2024 - Blair Curtis wrote: 94 pointsFrom a Mag. This opened up with leafy goodness and forward fruit. A few hours in the decanter benefited it immensely. At that stage the wine came together beautifully and took on a seamless quality. Still the fruit is nice and bright. And the leafy complexity stayed. The mouthfeel was a bit coarse at first, but after the decant it evened out quite nicely and fanned out. Delicious wine. Fun to drink now, but can hold many years if you wish. |

1/1/2024 - Blair Curtis wrote: 92 pointsHad this side-by-side with the 2008 of the same wine. Strikingly similar in all aspects. Clearly a family resemblance. The 2008 was just a bit crisper with more forward acid. The 2010 was more even-keeled...perhaps a bit more knitted together at this stage. But both wines displayed ample crunchy red fruit, nice spice, and were ready to be enjoyed. Fun to try these together. |

12/2/2023 - Blair Curtis wrote: 93 pointsThis showed extremely well today. I'll admit that I had a sample of this wine 2 years ago and based on that I was very worried. Back then the wine tasted like bruised apples, applesauce, and other not-so-good flavours. I decided to: (a) wait a couple years before opening this bottle, and (b) decant it into a wide-base decanter for a full hour before returning it to the bottle and taking it to lunch. This did the trick - and then some. The wine bore no resemblance to the sample from 2 years ago. This was lemony, with wonderful structure thanks to a beautiful acid spine - but yet there was just a bit of fat on the bones that led one taster to Meursault quickly (though several tasters commented this showed more like a very good Puligny 1er). This was excellent with seafood/shellfish dishes. Thrilled with this bottle, and very happy I exercised patience before checking on this wine again!!! |

12/2/2023 - Blair Curtis wrote: 92 pointsThis remains a very sturdy wine. First nose shows some obvious wood. But then good red and black fruits. In terms of the more masculine traits typical of a Clos Vougeot, this has them. (We had this alongside a 2010 Hudelot Noellat Clos Vougeot, which was a striking contrast with that wine showing much more development, elegance and femininity). In the last 10 years this 2008 wine has aged quite slowly. But at present the structural elements seem destined to last longer than the fruit...maybe. The wine did develop some in the glass over the course of a few hours - it was better later in the day. I have other bottles, and I'm going to gamble on leaving them alone for another 5 years to see what we have then. |

11/21/2023 - Blair Curtis wrote: 93 pointsShowed as quite young, but promising. Nailed by all tasters as a ripe vintage. Most guesses were younger (many thought 2012). Strawberry, ripe cherries. Interestingly showed a bit of Morey character when served blind (perhaps some Ponsot signature?) Overall a delicious wine that proved quite challenging for blind tasters to pin down...but not challenging to drink with lunch - it was delicious! |
