I originally thought this would be way too young but this turned out to be a pleasant surprise. A big young and nutty nose with a nice saltiness in the aftertaste, this is a complex and refined Champagne that can certainly age for a long time but starting to show greatness even when consuming today. We drank this in a flight with Krug '95, 2000, and NV. The '02 was much more vibrant and alive than the other two vintage bottles, with more depth and nuance. Incredible mouth feel and balance. Haven't had this in a long while, but my general recollection was that of the trilogy, the 1988 was the best. This showed a fair bit of maturity, where a lot of the cut seems to have disappeared to the sands of time. Initially, we thought that more air would help this become more expressive, but I don't think that really happened here -- it seemed to stay in stasis, or maybe even degraded a little with the few hours of air we gave it. Drank at Kenzo in Napa. Was better than the bottle I had about 6 months ago at Aurus at Four Seasons which was good but a tad tired. This bottle was drinking at peak peak. Amazing acidity like only Krug offers. Can go for years longer but unlikely to improve. No worries as was simply awesome! Hard to say what this will be like in a few years, my guess won't get better. How do you put points on a Picasso? You get my drift. Can't. Just pull the cork and let it speak to you. Spellbinding wine in every wine. Great balance and complexity. Mature but still very fresh and alive. Carbonation starting to fade but still there. Hence, I'd say drink up now and you'll be happy! ! ! Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comment

For my palate, this is in a really sweet spot, where there's just enough maturity to render this wine far more expressive. Given that this was before the Cavil transition, there's more of an outright opulence here that modern Krug doesn't quite have. This still has massive energy and is laser focused. This did not fully reveal itself over a 2 hour dinner. Continuous glass swirling helped reveal, to some extent, this supremely balanced chiseled beauty but really beauty to be with a finish that simply didn’t end. This probably needs another 5-10 years to reach its prime and will easily drink well for 4-5 more decades. This was exceptional with oysters and held its own with rack of lamb. I was very, very skeptical about the decision to release this wine in such a shoddy Champagne vintage. But this was honestly impressive. It far surpassed my expectations -- really, I should be trusting Krug more than myself. At first, right at the get-go, this showed a bit light and white-grapey, with a lot of structure and lots of acidity. But it came into better balance as the night passed. To be sure, this is not a Krug for the ages, but it is one that feels far more approachable now, versus the 2004, 2006, and 2008, which all felt underwhelming at release. Intense and minerally, with just the right amount of counterbalancing acid. Colour me impressed -- this may well be a bit of a dark horse of a vintage for Krug. 2 people found this helpful, do you? This was a deliciously mature wine with a developed straw colour and a fresh complex nose of white peach, Nashi pear, white cherries, wild strawberries, honey and nougat. The palate is quite rich with fruit and nougat flavours leading into a developed line of caramel and honeyed cashew flavours.
