2015 Reynolds Family Winery Cabernet SauvignonNapa Valley more |
12/1/2020 - Mark3548 Likes this wine: 92 pointsNot huge or overly complex, but has the unique profile that makes RFW wines so distinctive and so good. Fruit, spice, structure, delicious. |

2017 The Seventy Five Wine Company The SumCalifornia Red Blend more |
11/24/2020 - Mark3548 Likes this wine: 90 pointsNot rich or powerful, but tastes great—red fruits but not sweet—and is very friendly. Had it with a dinner salad, which was perfect—not sure how well it would stand up to heavier fare. |

2013 Domaine Serene Grand ChevalOregon Red Blend more |
11/20/2020 - Mark3548 Likes this wine: 91 pointsI tried this a while ago (2017?) and was not impressed. It was without charm, weak in flavor and thin and astringent. The past few years have helped a lot, because while still atypical for DS, it’s quite tasty now. It’s still light in texture, but the flavors have emerged, a mix of bright fruit and earth notes that somehow works. It also has a sour note up front that eases with air. It went very well with food—Tuscan chicken in our case—and I’d probably pair it with a good cheese if I could do it again. |

2016 Goosecross Cellars AmerItalNapa Valley Sangiovese Blend, Sangiovese more |
10/13/2020 - Mark3548 Likes this wine: 93 pointsVery well made. A bit spicy and savory, but also complex and generous with good fruit. I had doubts, but it picks up on the best of both grapes, avoiding the astringency of many Sangioveses or the olive notes of some Cabs. I expect it could age but seems to be in a very good drinking window now. |

2015 Gård Vintners Vaucluse Lawrence VineyardsColumbia Valley Red Blend more |
9/23/2020 - Mark3548 Likes this wine: 90 pointsHave had 2 bottles now, and I would drink up if you like fruit, which I do. Some Grenache funk on the nose, but more dark fruit and graphite on the palate. A little more savory than I generally prefer, but very food friendly—grill a good steak!—and enjoyable. |

9/12/2020 - Mark3548 Likes this wine: 92 pointsDelicious, with yeasty/baked goods on the nose and sweet lemon on the palate. There’s still a lot of zing left too. |

2013 Beran Zinfandel Napa Valleymore |
7/10/2020 - Mark3548 Likes this wine: 92 pointsI’ve wanted to try Beran for a while because I love a good Zin, but the price seemed steep. But for < $20 (thanks Last Bottle), it was a no brainer. And at that price, wow. It finds a great middle ground between the jam jars of the 2000s and the more austere recent style. Fruity, spicy, alcoholic, but not over the top and with good balance. I think it still has life but see no reason to wait. |

2013 Reynolds Family Winery The QuoteStags Leap District Red Bordeaux Blend more |
6/29/2020 - Mark3548 Likes this wine: 92 pointsTasted with 2015 The Quote. Two very different wines—I think it went from mostly Merlot to mostly Cabernet Sauvignon in that time. The 2013 was inviting from start, with sweet red fruit and baking spice flavors. It’s drinking very well now and didn’t change much even after 2 hours in a decanter. It lacked the complexity of the 2015, which starts out herbal and tannic and still needs a lot of air to open, but it’s a pleasure to drink. |

2016 Reynolds Family Winery Pinot Noir Carnerosmore |
6/23/2020 - Mark3548 Likes this wine: 91 pointsI’ve been less enthusiastic about RF Pinot Noir than their other red wines in the past, but this is really good. It definitely needs air though. It starts off with strong funky, barnyard notes on the nose, but those faded into the background after an hour in the decanter, replaced by plum and baking spices aromas that persist on the palate. It’s definitely a PN flavor profile but is dark and rich, showing its warm-weather roots. Very enjoyable if you like this style. |

2009 Mumm Napa DVX RoséNapa Valley Champagne Blend more |
5/11/2020 - Mark3548 Likes this wine: 93 pointsAbsolutely delicious. Sweet strawberry notes, with background yeast and mineral accents to keep it from being simple. I’ve had DVXs that had more depth and challenged me more, but this was just pure pleasure. Had it with mild Thai food, which was a good pairing. |

2014 Moccagatta BarbarescoNebbiolo more |
4/29/2020 - Mark3548 Likes this wine: 93 pointsPowerful. Tannic. Rich dark fruit, spice, herbs, cedar, and sweet tobacco. It needed time in the decanter but after 2 hours, wonderful to drink now. |

2016 Goosecross Cellars MalbecNapa Valley more |
4/27/2020 - Mark3548 wrote: 88 pointsI’m not a big Malbec fan, so I have no doubt that affects my opinion here. But this tastes quite good, with bright red fruit flavors at the fore. The tarry asphalt notes that I don’t like in many Malbecs are there, but more as an accent. The problem is the nose, which (to me) is reminiscent of a pair of old socks that someone wore to walk on a wet, newly paved road. I had to stop sniffing and just drink. |

2015 Goosecross Cellars BrantaYountville Red Blend more |
4/21/2020 - Mark3548 Likes this wine: 92 pointsA very nice blend, with the Sangiovese bringing a bright, slightly acidic note to the rich Cab and Petit Sirah flavors. I’m not sure what the Syrah is doing, but it adds up to an appealing combination. Drinking well now. |

2012 Reynolds Family Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Estate SelectNapa Valley more |
4/20/2020 - Mark3548 Likes this wine: 91 pointsDrinking very well now. It has an interesting cola note along with dark fruit and spice aromas and flavors. Not as rich as most RFW cabs I’ve tried but quite enjoyable. |

2013 Erath Pinot Noir La Nuit Magique Erath VineyardsWillamette Valley more |
4/18/2020 - Mark3548 Likes this wine: 91 pointsAlmost old world style. At first I didn’t like it much, but with air and my own palate adjustment it became compelling. Thin, mildly astringent, with more tea and leather than fruit and spice, yet layered and complex. Definitely a change of pace from most American wines. |

2014 Paraduxx (Duckhorn Vineyards) Red Wine Cork Tree Vineyard Napa ValleyMalbec Blend, Malbec more |
4/6/2020 - Mark3548 Likes this wine: 90 pointsWonderful flavors of dark fruit and baking spices, with a soft structure. I was a little surprised at the complete lack of tannic edge, and it’s more easygoing than powerful. Nonetheless it’s quite pleasant to drink, and I wouldn’t wait much longer in case it loses its fruit with more time. |

2013 Kenneth Volk Zinfandel Enz VineyardLime Kiln Valley more |
3/31/2020 - Mark3548 Likes this wine: 91 pointsStrong Zin flavors of fruit and spice, but with a savory edge, not the sweet, jammy, milk chocolate character of so many Zins. A little unexpected but appealing and tasty. Has held up well but definitely drink now—I think it’s only going to go down from here. |

3/26/2020 - Mark3548 Likes this wine: 90 pointsTasty with great dark fruit flavors, but it has a tarry, tannic edge. At this time I prefer the ‘15, which is already friendly and hedonistic. This improved with 2 hours in the decanter though, so a little more age may help. |

2012 Cascina Adelaide Barolo BaudanaNebbiolo more |
3/22/2020 - Mark3548 Likes this wine: 93 pointsDecanted for almost 2 hours before tasting. There was a lot of funk in the nose up front, but it evolved to very appealing cherries and baking spices after an hour in the decanter. In the glass there’s still earth and herbs mixed with the fruit on the bouquet. The up front palate is full-on cherry though, with mild herbs, earth and gripping tannins on the finish. Wonderful. I usually don’t give good Italian wines enough air, but this time I did and the rewards are profound. I will give my remaining bottle a couple more years, but IMO it drinks very well now with patience. |

2014 Domaine Serene Pinot Noir Côte Sud VineyardWillamette Valley more |
3/19/2020 - Mark3548 Likes this wine: 93 pointsSecond bottle—the first was consumed Nov 2018. The ~18 months since have helped soften the earthy, meaty notes, and fruit and spice are now at the fore. The silky texture and long finish remain noteworthy. Delicious. I liked it before and like it better now. |

3/6/2020 - Mark3548 Likes this wine: 92 pointsDrinking very well now. A hedonistic wine that packs a lot of delicious fruit and spice on a solid structure. This is the RFW merlot vintage to pick to go with dinner in 2020 IMO. |

2015 Domaine Serene Chardonnay Côte Sud Vineyard Dundee Hillsmore |
1/27/2020 - Mark3548 Likes this wine: 94 pointsRed wines open my eyes and make me say wow far more often than white. So when a white does, it’s noteworthy. This is absolutely terrific Chardonnay—lemony and structured but not austere, fruity and generous but not unctuous. I tend to drink whites young, but the 4+ years obviously sit well. I’ll give my ‘16 some more time. |
