Great QPR. Lovely nose of brioche and apples, nice effervescence in the mouth although not intensely bubbly. Definitely drinks above its price point and although I usually prefer BdB to PM blends, this is a winner for me.

Magnum. Purple color. Deep, dark fruit with that classic Napa sweetness. Baking spices and subtle oak round out a great wine. Nice depth and finish.

Short decant. Amazed at the quality after seeing an almost black cork and a very low fill level. Wouldn’t be craving a glass, but for a wine this old it was consumable with a few in the party really enjoying it. Garnet, almost brown in color. Leather and stewed fruit dominate.

Gaining some weight offering ripe yellow fruits with mango, ripe apple and ripe lemon drizzle. Some spiciness and a decent oak give the wine a luxurious feel and depth. Has a bit trouble hiding its 14%...

Saturated purple berries with red berry accents, red flowers, herbal teas, fresh and savory herbs, on the bouquet and palate.

Saturated throughout! Bold yet poised, expansive and refined, generous yet sleek. Seductive, velvet textures, powerful structure, long, profound finish.

The whole package! Still evolving and likely to continue for several years. Likely to peak after 2035. Exceptional QPR!

1/10. Marked with fine, dissolved gas, within normal range of a stable, healthy, passively moved wine like this. A few turbulent pours back and forth would remove it if that's what you're into. I mention this aspect mostly to explain such immature fruit flavor and grape body, all in a fully seven year old wine. CO₂ preserved it. And I consider it testimony to the promising chemistry of the object—primary fermentation products trapped by desirable long chains polysaccharides and such. If the point is to win the approval of an appellation jury, maybe it could have been aged in bulk longer. I'll not second guess all that.

It tasted slightly better the second day though it might have been a matter of context more than any chemical change in the wine. I brought back a neglected practice of house burrito preparation, and it paired 5/5 with that. I found in the drink abundant Dolcetto typicity, with blue and black fruits, blue-collar tannins, and natural, vitigenic acidity (no VA to speak of.) If I open another bottle this year I'll leave a path for it to drink over more than two days. I expect the window to open for this vintage sometime later this decade, extending easily through mid-2030s. 91+

Anniversary bottle, suffering from a bad cold so won’t rate. (And deliberately didn’t drink any of our more special anniversary bottles from ‘01). But on pnp the ripe fruit aromas were amazing despite my compromised state. 2 hours decant which seemed about right. First few sips were great for me, tannins smooth and ripe fruit. But after awhile I had trouble getting past the alcohol. I do think it could be my congestion so I share that for info only. Glad I didn’t open any fancy bottles and a bummer to be sick on our anniversary weekend. Here’s to many more with many nice bottles.

This poised vintage of Montrose delivers from the outset! Delightful expression of varieties in St. Estèphe place, unencumbered by oak and overt polish.

Redolent perfume, equal parts red and purple berries, flower garden, mint, and red berry liqueurs. Intensely juicy attack. Saturated yet weightless middle, backed by steely tannins, which clamp down at the back. Inflection-changing, thought-provoking finish.

This bottle had seven to years of maturation ahead, perhaps longer. Likely to enter its drinking window after 2035, and hold for several years. Satisfying!

Resembles Pahlmeyer PB or Alter Ego of Palmer. Cassis, milk chocolate, black pepper, pyrazines, pot pourri, expensive oak. Concentrated and elegant at the same time.
Impressive for the second wine.

A nice surprise at $16 from the underground cellar liquidation. I would have paid 2x and been happy.
Lemon, apple, mineral, medium intensity nose and palate. Very pleasant and the perfect chardonnay to have around for a weeknight after work drink.

Plenty of leather and earthiness with some minerality and forest fruit hints. Letting it breathe in the bottle for about 30min was much needed, a proper aeration/decanting of course would have worked better.

Feared this would be too old, but needn't have worried. Very long cork and... Huge amounts of new oak! Very plush, dark fruited. Deluxe, I think, is the word. Not one for those who like unoaked testaments to Northern Rhone terroir, very sleek. But... On this occasion I enjoyed it, and it's a good, extreme example of what oaked, rich Northern Rhone syrah is like. Nice fruit underneath. I'm minded to open my remaining two bottles over time, to see how the oak affects its ageing.

Another wonderful bottle of this wine from a case purchased on release. Bright lustrous golden yellow color. Slightly nutty, creamy and lemony nose. Palate does show some butter and fresh stone fruit in addition to the citrus and some vanilla. Long finish with plenty of zippy acidity yet rounded with rich texture.

"Chardonnay Extravaganza" Themed Dinner - Was served on its own to close out on a high after 14 wines had been poured prior and just as cheeses were being served. I realize this may sound very snobbish but I will write it all the same. It is always a privilege to drink a Selosse and they are extremely singular wines. Sometimes however a Selosse feels like another Selosse. It was my first VO but I did not find it very different from the several Initiales I had. 100% Chardonnay where you would never guess they are Chardonnay if you have in mind the citrusy/lemon curd qualities. Comparison to the Initiale is no faint priase as the Initiale is terrific IMO. Coming after the Salon / Lassaigne / Collin fireworks it was received with a small shoulder shrug as in meaning it was a 'known quantity'. On this one tasting only I would associate the VO to the Initiale closest with the expressions of the Rose, parcellaires and Substance very different.

Clear pale brick; clean medium plus nose of stewed strawberries, soil, leather and bruised fruit; dry; medium plus acidity; medium tannins; medium plus alcohol; medium body; medium flavour intensity; palate is tarter with amplified bruised fuji apple; medium plus finish; drink now - it hasn’t improved with age and is probably past its prime; the bruised fruit note dominated the palate and detracted from our enjoyment of the wine; we didn’t finish the bottle

Clear deep ruby; clean pronounced nose of stewed blueberries, blackberries and vanilla; dry; high acidity; medium plus tannins; high alcohol; medium plus body; medium plus flavour intensity; palate has fruit payoff and addition of cocoa; long finish; drink now or in a few years; plush and velvety on both the nose and palate - a delicious fruit tart in a glass; it remains light on its feet even with the high abv; I hoped for more development and complexity given the age; will wait a few more years before opening my last bottle; paired well with grilled chicken, broccoli and sweet potatoes

Although it is pretty young, it had a beautiful medium gold colour. No time needed to open up, drinking nicely already. Very expressive nose, yellow fruits and white flowers. Silky texture but at the same time really fresh with crisp acidity and concentrated. Complex. Very well balanced. Intense, long finish. Excellent price per value. 93+.

"Chardonnay Extravaganza" Themed Dinner - Flight 5 pitting 2 Jura Chards. Nose of cabbage initially that blew off with aeration. Great acidity. Shows little sign of evolution/oxidation. On a par quality-wise with the Tissot Tour de Curon next to it. The table enjoyed both wines. Between nose, texture and complexity they were the more satisfying wines by some distance vs the white burgs that preceded them.

Opened this wine and the cork came out clean and the wine was perfect. Let it breath for an hour. First taste had my wife expressing doubts and her switching to the Jasper Hlll shiraz. Happy days for me. The Domaine A opened up beautifully and was a delight. And to cap it off there was some Jasper Hill left to finish off with. Happy Days.

"Chardonnay Extravaganza" Themed Dinner - Flight 6 pitting 2 Jura Chardonnays. Very intense nose on this which I associate with slate-like minerality. Good viscosity and mouth-coating. I noted "glycerin". Very generous yet feeling balanced. I liked this very much. It started stronger than the 05 Ganevat Chalasses next to it but the latter caught up with airing.

Nice medium yellow straw colour. On the nose, upon opening, aromas of mango and touch of caramel and faint shredded wheat. Floral component as well. On the palate, the attack is frank, with a well rounded mid-palate, with the aromas from the nose, added citrus fruit, a good acidity a touch of mineral bitterness with a good intensity and length. I can't say that I appreciate this aged as much as I do the Brez or Basel, but this remains very nice. For me this is certainly at peak and is probably good for another couple of years, but probably best today - no point in keeping them longer - might as well enjoy now. 90-91

Passed by the 520 - Champagnes et Vins d'Auteurs after a morning at the Epernay market and noticed that Paul Launois was offering a tasting of his grand cru champagnes. As different as the labels are from the champagne tradition, so are the names. I guess in this guess, the Contraste is a reference to this being from PM grown in a location different from the Cote des Blancs. This wine also shows the particulars of this grape, though I have found it to be more distinctive from other grower-producers.

Ruby, transparent. Red cherries, redcurrants and pomegranate with delicate sweet baking spices on the nose. Disjointed palate, with screechy acid, slightly sappy tannin and alcohol heat, with some amorphous red fruits. Very savoury, one dimensional. Maybe my palate is off tonight since the last bottle was so lovely, but OH agrees that it is one-dimensional. Maybe shutting down for a while, or maybe a bit of cork taint. Will leave the rest for some time.

Passed by the 520 - Champagnes et Vins d'Auteurs after a morning at the Epernay market and noticed that Paul Launois was offering a tasting of his grand cru champagnes. His labels are very interesting and a strong departure from the champagne traditions; he informed that his wife designed them. His wines are definitely distinctly superior to the "average" champagne, and offer intensity, bracing acidity, and length.

Internationale du Goût - "Chardonnay Extravaganza" , unbridled exploration of French Chardonnay: "Chardonnay Extravaganza" Themed Dinner - Flight 5 pitting 2 Cote de Beaune 1ers from the same vintage. I found this a bit better, more complex and interesting than its flightmate PYCM Meursault Perrieres. Yet this could not match the verve, personality, poise, excitement that the top Champagnes had delivered in previous flights. This was also to be outclassed by the 2 Jura Chards that followed with their more singular personalities. Comparative tasting is most unfair though. Fads and group-think momentum play their part. This is still a producer i adore and doubtless I would have found lots of qualities and finer details had I drunk this on its own.

Medium ruby colour, medium aroma of plum, cherry, white pepper, straw, cedar, undertones of varnish. Lively acidity, fine and persistent tannin, medium body and finish. On the palate, plum, blackberry, green capsicum, milk chocolate. The fresh fruit gives it a slightly sweet flavour. Tannins not playing a major role.
An acceptable wine but little integration and complexity, I don’t have high expectations in the future.
