Introduction

A blind tasting of 13 great wines with 7 other DC winos. Great lineup and time had by all.

Flight 1 - Whites (7 notes)

White
2005 Nicolas Joly Clos de la Coulée de Serrant France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières-Coulée de Serrant
92 points
Medium apple juice in color. Nose of diesel, oxidative, red apple, lacquer, smoke. Palate of older red apple, oxidative, honey, smoke, white pepper/minerality. Viscous and a nice mouth feel, was much better the first time around as when this warmed up to room temp the alcohol showed up. Loved the complexity.

White
2002 Domaine Bernard Morey et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
88 points
Medium gold in color. Lemon, white flowers, and minerality on the nose. On the palate there was lemon with some minerality. My main complaint was that this was thin and had a decent finish at best. Bob mentioned Chablis and I concurred at the time was a little disappointed when found out this was a Montrachet.
White
2006 Didier Dagueneau Pur Sang France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé
93 points
Nose of sea salt, jalapeño pepper, citrus, smoke, and a little oak. Palate of citrus, key lime, jalapeno pepper skin, sea shell. Nice mouthfeel, balance, and complexity. Guessed DD.
White
2006 Richard Leroy Anjou Les Noëls de Montbenault France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Anjou
90 points
Nose of diesel, lacquer, tart apple. Palate of unsweetened apple cider, smoke, minerality. Nice mouth feel, acidity, and really nice balance. Guessed younger Lorie.
White
2004 Domaine Jo Pithon Savennières La Croix Picot France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières
92 points
Nose of citrus, honeysuckle, furry funk. On the palate there was citrus, honeysuckle, funky minerality and still good acidity.
White - Off-dry
2007 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
87 points
Funky floral, gasoline/petrol nose, with a little citrus. On the palate there was candied citrus and floral, but was really fat IMO. Alsace was my guess. Improved throughout the night, but that was after the notes were finished.
White
2000 Domaine Laroche Chablis Grand Cru Les Blanchots Réserve de l'Obédience France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
91 points
Medium gold in color. Nose of honey, wax, chalk. On the palate there was more honey, white chocolate, and chalk. Not enough acid to make this great, but guessed it was an older burg.

Flight 2 - Reds (6 notes)

Red
2006 Yannick Amirault Bourgueil Les Quartiers France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Bourgueil
92 points
Nose of raspberry, leather, underbrush. On the palate there was raspberry, pepper, chocolate, underbrush. Good balance and finish. Thought this was forward and might be a ringer from S. Africa. Guessed right bank blend with some PV going on.
Red
1999 Domaine Tempier Bandol Cuvée Spéciale Cabassaou France, Provence, Bandol
93 points
Dark red in color with a little bricking. Nose of black cherry, violets, cedar. Palate of more ripe black cherry, tobacco, herb. The structure, balance, acidity, and tannin were still in check, this will still need 5 years to be in its prime drinking state IMO. Was totally shocked by this, guessed older left bank because of the tannin structure. Will be buying more from the source.
Red
1990 Château Clerc Milon France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
91 points
Could tell from the color that this was an older wine guessed mid 90’s with noticeable CF. Nose of red cherry, wet animal fur, some gym shoe aspect that I noticed this morning, but overall I really liked the nose and found it the highlight of the wine. The palate on the other hand had cherry, leather, underbrush, greenish, with some tannin going on. Made the comment that I could smell this all night as long as I didn’t have to drink it.
Red
2000 Château Pontet-Canet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
88 points
Dark red to purple in color. Perfumed nose, cherry, baking spices. Palate of cherry, with simple palate that was too tight with acid and tannin noted. Was a shame because this didn’t show well at this age. Thought this was a really young 2005 because it was so tight. Would agree that this can only improve.
Red
2006 Di Lenardo Friuli Merlot Just Me Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Friuli
93 points
Dark red to black in color. Nose of blackberry, black plum, smoke, graphite. Palate of black fruits, graphite, and some decent complexity going on and there was noticeable tannins. Was a big wine, would have never guessed Merlot or Italy either.
Red
2007 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
88 points
Welch’s grape juice, smoke, and black pepper on the nose. Palate of more Welch’s grape juice, black pepper. Decent minerality, acidity, and tannin, but was kind of fat IMO. Guessed 07 Southern Rhone, but didn’t think Cdp at all.
