Introduction

Some D.C. friends and I packed up wine, glasses, meat and other good food, and treked four hours to my parent's mill house in Appomattox, Virginia. It was hot as hell, but we started off with some roses to cool down. Then, it was on to the whites, which were kicking. My mom loved tasting all the different chards, and I sure did, too. The reds were equally as impressive. So many different styles. The wine and food were great, but the whole trip was a total blast, especially the shower in the waterfall I took this morning to wake me up from a sweet hangover.

Flight 1 (13 notes)

Rosé
2009 Château de Manissy Tavel Cuvée des Lys France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Tavel
86 points
bright strawberry color and lots of strawberries on the nose. on the palate, its got high acid and some muskiness to highlight the melon and cherry flavors.
Rosé
2008 Coleman Nicole Pinot Noir Rosé Sonoma Coast USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
84 points
explosive nose of bananas, baby food, plastic and bouncy balls. bright on the palate and crisp. tangy cranberries and some musk. unique. don't really know if i like it or not.
White
2006 Maldonado Chardonnay Los Olivos Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
93 points
golden colored. i still love the nose on this. tons of honeycomb, marzipan and butter. thick and super creamy. so honeyed and rich. again, i love the acid and freshness of this. my ma loved this wine, as i knew she would.
White
2006 Cameron Blanc Clos Electrique USA, Oregon
92 points
the nose on this chard is so fresh. lots of lemons, citrus and some honey. there's a creamsickle explosion on the palate, with orange rind, cream, vanilla and butter. very complex and backed up with some nice acid and salty flavors to balance out the spice and vanilla flavors. this has so much going on for it. i might've guessed this for a high-end puligny or a chassagne.
White
2008 Château du Coing de Saint Fiacre Val de Loire Cuvée d'Aurore France, Loire Valley, Val de Loire
89 points
tropical nose. almost smells like pinot gris. pineapple on the palate, green apple peel, even lemons. there's a bit of graininess as well. very unique chard.
White
2007 Rudi Pichler Riesling Smaragd Achleithen Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
90 points
even on this young wine, i picked up some petrol. lots of minerals, which peach, febreeze and lemon cleaner. creamy, but refreshing, with lots of lemon peel, flowers, long finish.
White
2006 A.J. Adam Riesling Kabinett Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
91 points
golden colored. pineapples explode on the nose with mango, gasoline and limes. i love the balance of this wine: the richness, the sweetness, the freshness, the lively and playful fruit and the minerality. it's got everything i love in a mosel riesling in all the right amounts.
Red
N.V. Vineyard 29 Hurricane Cuvée USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
90 points
i got a mix of cranberries, currants and mushrooms on the nose, also some mocha. it's spicy on the palate with solid tannins. lots of smoky chocolate flavors. what i love about this wine is the spicy acid.
Red
2000 Von Strasser Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain
90 points
really liked this cab. lots of fruit, but solid structure. age has given this a bit of craked pepper, leather and cedar flavors. still a young wine that could have quite a few more years in front of it.
Red
2007 Sine Qua Non Syrah Labels USA, California, Central Coast
92 points
tasted blind. notes as follows: pitch colored. the nose is intoxicating. black blood, ink, must, white pepper, charcoal and gobs of fruit. the intensity of fruit and darker, smokier notes is incredible. this really coats the palate. but it's not flabby juice. it's got serious structure. explosive dr. pepper and root beer flavors. also lots of soy sauce, smoke and paint on the palate. it's huge, but not so offensive that you can't keep drinking it. i guessed this as a central coast syrah, but i knew it was something very unique. after unveiling, i realized that sqn's live up to their high reputation. i can't brush the cult status of these wines off, no matter how much i'd like to. this one was damned enjoyable.
Red
2006 Viñedos de Ithaca Priorat Odysseus Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
90 points
dark purple color. the nose explodes with cherry sauce and anise. cranberry preserves, raspberries and mocha on the palate. its really silky and lively though. and there's a bit of sweet terryaki marinade on the finish. very enjoyable bottle.
Red
2006 K Vintners El Jefe En Chamberlin Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
91 points
the amount of fruit, and the purity of it, is remarkable. just delicious. had the last of the bottle after it had been opened and loved it. makes me think this needs a few years to show its full potential.
Red - Fortified
1994 Dow Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
92 points
i was really surprised by how young this wine still was. it's nowhere near it's prime. but, nevertheless, i rated it a 92 because i loved it and just know it's going to be spectacular in another decade. it's got a lot of plum skins, smoke, cherry licquer and fig paste on the nose. the palate is rich, but not cloying or hot. just filled with caramel-covered cherries, smoke and a bit of charcoal. love the boldness of this wine, but would love to wait for the subtleties to come out with time.
