Introduction

What a great evening of great wines and great freinds. Thanks Patrick!

Flight 1 (1 note)

Red
1998 Capanna Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
91 points
Elegant style with a nose of dusty cherry, mushroom and leather. Mid to full body. Very nice balance of fruit, tannins and acid on the palate. The Brunello earth/shale is there firmly supporting the dried cherries and leather again. Drinking well 4 hours after decanting and returning to the bottle. May be prepared to offer more in a couple of years.

Flight 2 (1 note)

Red
2001 Celler de Capçanes Montsant Cabrida Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Montsant
92 points
Nice fresh fruit, good animal undertones and a sprinkling of white pepper. Medium bodied with good structure/fuit balance. Palate consistent with nose plus mineral and a hint of orange peel. Seems to me that it will improve for at least a year or two.

Flight 3 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
Tangerine and honey with licorice undertones. Rich, thick mouthful of carmel, spice & tangerine. More carmel/honey than fruit in dominant character. Very nice.

Flight 4 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château Suduiraut France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
94 points
Coconut, carmel, lemon rind and those sticky popcorn balls I used to eat when I was a kid. Delicious, deep and complex.

Flight 5 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château La Tour Blanche Sauternes France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
96 points
Fresh orange, spice, truffles and more on this graceful nose. Thick mouth feel. Silky and rich. Impressive difference between the nose and the palate which offers more of a nutty undertone that shows the orange and spice in a different light. Everything lingers wonderfully in the long finish.

Flight 6 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château Rieussec France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
97 points
Apricots, with a little brown sugar and carmel. Thick, warm palate of rich apricot & honey. Big and impressive. Quite complex and difficult to describe but wonderful.

Flight 7 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
100 points
If this isn't a 100 point wine, I don't know what is. I am by no means an experienced Sauternes taster, but this just showed soooo much complexity and magic, that I don't know how it could improve. The wonder is that it WILL improve for decades to come. The Nose: carmel popcorn, coconut, spicy tartness, apricot and much more that I could not put a handle on. All presenting in a subtle and unassuming wave of aroma. The Palate: Weightless and thick at the same time. Carmel, Apricot, orange peel & honey with an incredibly long finish of honey sweetened croissant. Along with all of this there is a backbone of good acid to tie it together. Every facet of this wine flowed seamlessly into the next.
