Pauillac vs St. Julien (2006)
Wine Road Tel-Aviv
Tasted June 24, 2010 by Yagil with 866 views
Introduction
Always attractive to compare worthy wines of the two adjacent regions - though it was understood that 2006 vintage is too young to really enjoy, not to mention it's wasn't a great vintage.
Flight 1 (6 notes)
Red
2006 Château Lagrange (St. Julien)
90 points
gentle pleasant aroma, not rich enough, still very closed, tannic, woody, quite boring at this stage
Red
2006 Château Duhart-Milon
89 points
wonderful animal aroma, even impressive, however weak in taste, too dry, still very closed
Red
2006 Clos du Marquis
89 points
very pleasant aroma, kind of 'sweet & cute, flattering wine' - but still closed. much too early to drink now
Red
2006 Château Léoville Poyferré
89 points
elegant & typical St. Julien aroma, a bit bitter, woody. too young to enjoy
Red
2006 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste
89 points
wonderful aroma, balanced with taste, which quite tannic, a bit woody, with long after-taste. Still very closed
Flight 2 (4 notes)
Red
2006 Château Léoville Barton
88 points
restrained aroma, not developed enough yet, very tannic, dry & closed. too young to enjoy.
Red
2006 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron
91 points
light & elegant aroma, very elegant taste, but still weak (in taste), balanced. Too young to enjoy.
Red
2006 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou
92 points
great aroma, quite impressive; tannic in taste, balanced, complex, structured. very closed. too young to enjoy.
Red
2006 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande
91 points
elegant & feminine aroma, smooth, velvet in palate, well balanced. too young to enjoy.
Flight 3 (1 note)
White - Sweet/Dessert
2006 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey
90 points
nice golden color, sweet & strong aroma, sweet and smooth in taste. A pure dessert.
Closing
One could appreciate the potential of the wines and to get a handful impression of the vast differences between wines from very adjacent vineyards. But as said already - one could not really enjoy tasting such young wines. This tasting took place at least 10 years too early...
