NORTHERN RHÔNE SYRAHS

Vin, Vino, Wine Palo Alto CA

Tasted April 6, 2011 by SanFranSoxFan04 with 572 views

Introduction

Syrahs from the Northern Rhône are different, more earthy, more nuanced, and more spicy. They are not to everyone’s taste, and bear little resemblance to the more fruity Syrahs that come from California and Australia. Here are eight terroir-driven examples, ranging in price from $20 to $55.

1. 2008 Vin de Pays “Syrah” (Philippe Faury)
2. 2005 Crozes-Hermitage (Rousset)
3. 2006 Crozes-Hermitage “Silene” (J.L. Chave)
4. 2005 Saint-Joseph “Offerus” (J.L. Chave)
5. 2003 Crozes-Hermitage “Les Picaudières” (Rousset)
6. 2007 Saint-Joseph (Saint Cosme)
7. 2002 Cornas “Renaissance” (Auguste Clape)
8. 2001 Côte-Rôtie (Guy Bernard)

Thick texture, sweet nose, seltzer like savory flavor.
