Introduction
As Doug mentioned - we decided to go for a drive :) Only an hour and a half away from Queens and the weather was excellent. A HUGE thanks to both Charles and Kareem Massoud - hospitality is not the word here - you feel like family.
The wines are excellent - all of them, and as Doug commented - that pretty amazing as they range in style and vintages. a wonderfull tasting!
Flight 1 - LENZ (7 notes)
White
2004 Lenz Gewürztraminer
USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
sweet nose of lychi and spice, but the body feels hollow... bit short on the finish as well. fun idea but need to be more balanced.
Red
2001 Lenz Cabernet Sauvignon Old Vines
USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
heavy nose, oaky with black fruit pushing through, medium finish. the body is lighter than the nose suggests, oak is out of balance for me.
Red
2000 Lenz Merlot Estate Selection
USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
tar, plums, leather.good acidity keeping this wine very fresh. remindsme of Italian wines. this is a good wine.
Red
2000 Lenz Merlot Old Vines
USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
rich nose tar, plums and leather, meaty and great middle, long finish with serious tannins. can keep for a few more years.the only issue is the $$
Flight 2 - PAUMANOK (17 notes)
White
2005 Paumanok Sauvignon Blanc
USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
tropical, green grassy notes, cassis, long finish with nice acidity. crowd pleaser (together with the Chenin)
White
2005 Paumanok Chenin Blanc
USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
tropical notes with a great note of honey. with a bit of air even red berries. a bit simple in the middle but a happy wine!
White
2005 Paumanok Riesling
USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
touch of apple on the nose - reminds of pfalz, long middle, clean and balanced with a dry finish. nice riesling in a german qba trocken style
Red
2002 Paumanok Merlot
USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
i just LOVE this wine. its fresh, ripe, great mouthfeel to it, plum and spicy finish. trully excellent
Red
2003 Paumanok Cabernet Franc
USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
if you love cab franc you must try this, green pepper notes but without being overly vegetal, light body, long finish. red berries, good tannins on the finish.
Red
2003 Paumanok Festival Red
USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
Ripe and rich, earthy tones, black berries, leather. the oak is much beter integrated then the last time i had it. good stuff :)
Red
2001 Paumanok Merlot Grand Vintage
USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
plums, rich nose and color, lovely red and black fruit, excellent acidity and balance. serious grip on the long finish. an excellent effort
Red
2000 Paumanok Assemblage
USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
Assemblage is always my fav. this is much more evolved than the '02, bdx nose, plums, rich in the mouth, great balance and acidity that keeps it very fresh. this is VERY VERY good.
Red
2002 Paumanok Assemblage
USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
third time for me..and i got some more to take home. this is excellent but needs more time. aromatic nose, good texture and tannins, plums and earth, tobacco? a meaty wine. serious finish with some grip.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2003 Paumanok Sauvignon Blanc Late Harvest
USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
this showed well today - and easily could have been placed along with Sauternes in a lighter year. sweet nose, good fruit and balance. not overly sweet and very long clean finish. yummy. only 90 cases made (24/.375)
Closing
