Introduction

This was a terrific opportunity to taste through 5 vintages of Château Cos d'Estournel, gain some insight into their style and better understand why many people believe they are worthy of first growth status. The vintages tasted were 2000 – 2004 with one similar Washington blend added in for contrast and comparison.

This had a ripe, complex, yet reserved bouquet of black currant, blackberry, black cherry, licorice, spice, mineral and cocoa aromas. The palate was ripe, concentrated, moderately tannic and dry with flavors of black currant, blackberry, licorice, spice, mineral and cocoa. My score was 91+ The groups average score was 90.9

The palate was rich, dense and layered with flavors of blackberry, cassis, spice, mocha and minerals…more fruit than the other vintages tasted with it. The palate was lush and complex, but lighter bodied than the other vintages tasted with it…flavors of black currant, blackberry, licorice, spice and cocoa. This had a deep and rich bouquet of blackberry, black currant, black cherry, mocha, cocoa, licorice and spice aromas. The palate was rich and ripe with flavors that followed the nose. It was much more fruit forward than any of the Cos d’Estournel tasted with it. The group’s average score was 93.1

Closing

Everyone commented on the consistency of style…ripe black fruit, strong earthy characteristics, a powerful structure and quite dry on the palate. They were all fabulous!
