Introduction

Back in town to see some friends.

Flight 1 - Before Dinner (2 notes)

White
2008 Domaine de la Pépière Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine sur lie Vieilles Vignes Clos des Briords France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine sur lie
94 points
Served really cold at first, it wasn't until this had warmed up a bit and seen some air that it began to soar. A gorgeous rendition of the Briords and actually showed a bit more weight than I would have thought. Tasted a bit what I'd expect from Pepiere's Clisson. Anyways, this had beautiful lemon, flint, florals, and an ocean water tone to the bottle. Brilliant bottle of Muscadet.

2002 Pierre Gimonnet & Fils Champagne Special Club Millesimé de Collection France, Champagne

Very bright and energetic. Lots of coiled citrus tones, some wet stone components, and a nice touch of yeasty/bready notes. Loved the subtle sweetness on the palate and how precise it felt. Lots of class.

Flight 2 - Fac Simile Vertical (3 notes)

Rosé - Sparkling
2008 Jérôme Prévost La Closerie Fac-Simile France, Champagne
93 points
A beautiful wine that had a lot of lush fruit and floral elegance while remaining cool and sleek. At the core, there was really nice strawberries, cherries, and lime. Palate was edgy with great bite and balance. In a great place today, and I'm curious how much better it will get.

Drank alongside the 2008 Fac Simile. I thought this was really good, but not as deep or complex as the 2008. A touch fleshier and rounder, the fruit was just a hair less pure than the 2008. This did, however, have some really nice earthy elements to it that I didn't find on the 2008. A great Champagne.
Rosé - Sparkling
2012 Jérôme Prévost La Closerie Fac-Simile France, Champagne
I thought this was a bit disjointed, and showing its extreme youth. What I did see here was a wine with a number of nice components; aromas, fruit, and acidity were all very nice. Just felt that this was a while off from showing as an integrated wine.

Flight 3 - White Flight (4 notes)

White
2002 Edmond Vatan Sancerre Clos la Néore France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
flawed
Very corked.
White
2008 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
95 points
Fresh, clean, and clear. Even in its youth, the depth to this wine was just outstanding. The aromas were exotic and deep with oceanic tones that mixed nicely with fresh lemon and dill. Great weight to the palate with plenty of acidity and elegance. Loved it.
White
2009 Emmanuel Houillon (Maison Pierre Overnoy) Chardonnay Arbois Pupillin France, Jura, Arbois Pupillin
94 points
An impressive chardonnay that had some a command over me during dinner. The richness and balance of the palate was intriguing, all the while it had a nutty edge to it that many of these wines can take on. Beautifully exotic, rich/round, and expressive. A beautiful package.
White
2008 Domaine Dujac Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Monts-Luisants Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
89 points
An interesting chardonnay that was on one hand sweet and oaky, while on the other retaining some nice elegance. Lots of fresh melon on the palate with decent acidity too. Had a glass before the end of the evening and the floral aspects of the wine had taken off a bit more.

Flight 4 - Red Flight 1 (3 notes)

Red
2010 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Irancy France, Burgundy, Côtes d'Auxerre, Irancy
90 points
Rich and spicy nose that had some cranberries, cherries, roses, and pepper. The palate was juicy and had an exotic pepper/earth/floral thing going on. The only other Dauvissat Irancy I had was insanely green, but this was far more balanced, complex, and concentrated. I liked this a whole lot more than their 2011.

1990 Edmond Vatan Sancerre Rouge France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre Rouge
91 points
Not something you see everyday...this was a real treat to try. I got to this wine a bit later in the night than others did, but the aromatics were gorgeous and rustic. Think very pure Loire Pinot Noir with beautiful floral notes, ripe red fruits, and earth. The palate wasn't as expressive as its aromas, and I think this lacked a bit on the mid-palate. Tons of character, though, and a style of wine that is hard to come by these days.
Red
2002 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny Le Bourg France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny
97 points
The bottle was opened around lunch time for an 8pm dinner. A truly magnificent Cabernet Franc with a beautiful combination of power and elegance that Rougeard has seemed to master. Aromas were deep and haunting, and the palate was smooth as silk and incredibly deep. Gorgeous!

Flight 5 - Red Flight 2 (4 notes)

Red
2001 Domaine Dujac Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
92 points
Opened at 1130am for 8pm dinner. Needed all of that air, too! Lots of "Dujac spice" on the nose, with red fruit, nice floral notes, and some damp earth. Really liked the palate. While it was still firm, the fruit was nicely concentrated and deep. If you have these bottles in your cellar, have some patience.
Red
1998 Domaine Jean Grivot Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
90 points
A powerful wine that had a lot of the 1998 fruit-forward character to it. More of a dark-fruited profile, nice spice, and touches of leaves, and earth. There was some really nice depth to the floral notes, so it still had some wispy, floral elegance to it.

2012 Henri Jouan Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Clos Sorbé France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
94 points
Opened for science. An exotic nose with aromas of cherry, cured meat, dried roses, and cranberries. The palate had a bit of warm spices at first, but soon those faded into the background as the fruity and meaty tones grew. Incredibly lithe palate with lots of intensity and depth. Hard to find any other producer putting together pinot in the way Jouan does it these days. Beautiful.

2008 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Cailles France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

I was really impressed by this young Chevillon. Rumors swirl about how Chevillon's need ages to mature, and while I age my at home, it was great to get to try one through the generosity of a friend. Beautiful aromas of spice, violets, cranberries, and minerals. The palate had great concentration and intensity to it, and I thought the palate was nearly seamless. This will be absolutely gorgeous once some of the secondary and tertiary flavors grow over time.

Flight 6 - Dessert (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1994 Müller-Catoir Mußbacher Eselshaut Rieslaner Trockenbeerenauslese Germany, Pfalz
92 points
There was some debate whether or not this was corked, but I didn't think it was. There was what I thought was some bottle funk lingering around, but it didn't seem to distract from the peach, apricot, and nectarines. I loved the silkiness of the palate and thought it was quite delicious!
