Salil's

Introduction

Thanks to Salil for hosting. An interesting lineup as always!

Flight 1 - Starter (1 note)

White
2009 Domaine Ramonet Bourgogne-Aligoté France, Burgundy, Bourgogne-Aligoté
82 points
I found this rather disinteresting and one-note. While the oak doesn’t come across as showy or new, it is rather noticeable – particularly at the front end – relative to the deadpan fruit notes (white fruit and some grapefruit). With air this took on a hint of butterscotch and lemon grass tones on the front end but never really got anything going. This was also surprisingly light on acid, with the ripe vintage characteristics coming through and bogging down the palate.

Flight 2 - Salil's "Inky" and "Jammy" holdings (2 notes)

Red
2002 Mount Langi Ghiran Shiraz Mast Rare Reserve Block Australia, Victoria
92 points
Subtle nose shows sweet cherry, roses, tar and an initial rubber toy/ band-aid note that blew off. Very well-balanced on the palate; showing rich, youthful fruit that possessed good restraint and trade-off with its earthy components. Fine tannins. This really reminded me of a modern young Barolo.
Very Good to Excellent - Drink or Hold
Red
2005 Cayuse Syrah Cailloux Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
87 points
Ripe, voluptuous nose showing some signs of age and a streak of VA. Funky, dark toned fruit and spice notes show up in the middle (sweet strawberry, black cherries, cinnamon) and carry into the finish where it picks up additional spiced and old leather notes. It’s possible the VA is to blame here, but this seemed to be in rough shape.

Flight 3 - For the love of sulfur (1 note)

This flight also included a 2007 Philippe Pacalet Chambolle Moose Village that I didn't take any notes on or care to relive by writing one.

Red
2006 Jean Bourdy Côtes du Jura Rouge France, Jura, Côtes du Jura
87 points
Stemmy, teased tones on the nose and palate showing dried cherries, leaves and floral notes. Very pretty wine, with a good elegance that carries into the backend before giving way to a tense, drying finish that seems to detract from the overall experience.
Good – Drink Now or Hold

Flight 4 - Loire Cab Franc (2 notes)

Red
2009 Charles Joguet Chinon Les Varennes du Grand Clos France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
89 points
Ripe, dark fruit with a mild underlying herbal characteristic. For all of its ripeness, the fruit is very focused and possesses concentrated acidity. Finishes very lengthy with persistent tannins. With air the fruit was dialed back a bit and revealed a well-balanced wine, but this is still young and brooding.
Very Good – Hold
Red
2011 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Franc de Pied France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
92 points
Nose features dark red fruit with a very predominant tobacco leaf note. Reserved and consistent on the palate, this comes across with balanced, bright fruit and tertiary flavors underneath a sweet topnote. Long finish. This is a very high-quality and food-friendly wine but doesn’t quite rise to the level of the 2009 in terms of complexity.
Very Good – Drink or Hold

Flight 5 - Northern Rhone Syrah (2 notes)

Red
2009 Eric Texier Côtes du Rhône Saint-Julien-en-Saint-Alban Vieille Serine Domaine de Pergaud France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Saint-Julien-en-Saint-Alban
91 points
Cool blue fruit, pepper and spice, and a high-toned lavender notes follow from nose to the middle, where strong, gritty tannins carry the fruit through the finish. Good steady acids give this a good freshness from entry through finish.
Very Good
Red
2001 Dumien-Serrette / Nicolas Serrette Cornas Patou France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
89 points
Beautiful nose of sweet, ripe, farmstand fruit backed up by leathery notes. This is very fresh and light-on-its-feet, particularly on entry, showing mature, restrained fruit propped up by bright mineral tones. For all of its prettiness blind, this did not display any traditional cornas characteristics (pepper, dark fruit, olive and brine, etc). This is more akin to a lower-to-mid tiered hermitage, in my opinion.

Flight 6 - Desert (2 notes)

White - Off-dry
1997 Zilliken (Forstmeister Geltz) Saarburger Rausch Riesling Auslese #9 Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
93 points
The nose gives a distinct new rubber tire note that doesn’t seem to show up on the palate. On entry there is a burst of bright lemon that carries into the finish where the initial charge from the fruit drops off and is replaced by less concentrated honey and orchard fruit flavors that linger on and on. The contrast from the nose to palate is terrific. For all of its depth this is incredibly light and lively.
Excellent – Drink or Hold
White - Off-dry
2005 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese *** Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Bright orange rind frames a warmer core of spiced, candied fruits. Some boytrized notes are apparent and make for a heavier finish.
Very Good to Excellent
