Introduction

4th of July, Steaks, friends and good wine ... unfortunately the sun was burning at 36 degrees celsius. Was still a great event and a big thank to the wonderful hosts Irene and Rene.

Flight 1 - Champagne to start the celebration (3 notes)

Dom Perignon was the star. Egly was also top but almost too heavy at the high temperatures...

White - Sparkling
2004 Bollinger Champagne La Grande Année France, Champagne
92 points
Light gold in color. Subtle nose of ripe apples and baked brioche. Fine bubbles, nice balance but a bit short in the finish. Easy drinking Champagne but in the current phase there are better alternatives for less money. Bottle Deg Oct 2012.

2004 Dom Pérignon Champagne France, Champagne
95 points
Wonderful DomP. Light yellow in color. Nose shows smoked flavors, toasted bread, lime and apples. Very elegant almost light but at the same time long and multifaceted. An enormous wine and so addicting. Much better than the 2003. Amazing now and in the next 10-15 years.

White - Sparkling
2003 Egly-Ouriet Champagne Grand Cru Brut Millésimé France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
93 points
Golden ripe color. Nose shows cooked apples, caramel and yeast. Quite a heavy and rich Champagne, but likely among the best produced in 2003. Most definitely much better than DomP 2003. As the weather was 35 Deg. Celsius this was not the right Champagne, to maskulin to heavy but still a superb bottle. Drink now - 2022

Flight 2 - Cab Flight 1: Mature Cabs (2 notes)

Red
1992 Dominus Estate Napanook Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
94 points
Light garnet. Nose of leather, cherries and chocolate. Smooth, long and highly elegant wine. Reminds quite a bit of a mix between St. Julien and Pauilllac. Great wine. Now fully mature
Red
1985 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Martha's Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
92 points
Served blind. Still deep red. Nose of eucalyptus, horse saddle and cherries. Has something flawed so I initially tipped on Heitz Martha's. After some time in the air it started to develop and the somewhat pungent smell started to disappear. Initially I was hoping that the ugly duckling will turn into the beautiful swan...unfortunately it did not. Still was an ok wine, but at the same time the 1985 Martha's is a frustrating undertaking. So far I only had one bottle with 98pts and the rest were flawed or in the low 90s.

Flight 3 - Cab Flight 2 (2 notes)

Red
1994 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
94 points
A wine I am quite familiar with, and the last ones were always quite mature. This specific bottle was perfect though. Red berries, cherries, and sweet chocolate. Wonderful balance and long. Now fully mature but just amazing to drink. Great stuff
Red
2004 Maybach Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Materium USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
93 points
Seved blind. I initially guessed a 2007 or 2008 Shiraz. Was I wrong...! Dark color. Nose shows sweet dark fruit, mint and dark 90% chocolate with hints of pepper. Still quite a chubby baby with an enormous potential. Decant or better wait 5 more years...

Flight 4 - Cab Flight 3 (2 notes)

Red
2003 Vineyard 29 Cabernet Sauvignon Aida Estate USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
91 points
Sweet dark berries, typical cab but quite driven by fruit and high alcohol. A solid wine but for me too much and the high alcohol is too present...drink now
Red
2004 Kapcsándy Family Winery Cabernet Sauvignon State Lane Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Yountville
93 points
Dark color. Nose of leather, dark berries and cassis. Still very young and tarty. Long and very complex. Starts to open up after some time but definitely needs to rest for another 5-10 years. I can see RP 98/100 in the future. At the moment still very backward...

Flight 5 - Intermezzo (1 note)

White
2011 Peter Michael Chardonnay Ma Belle-Fille USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley
92 points
An intermezzo to match the Rosemary sorbet. Great wine, quite classical and not overdone. Easy drinking Chard.

Flight 6 - Cab Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
2005 Buccella Merlot USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
Dark red fruit. Sweet raspberry, vanilla and herbs. Quite a modern wine which is also high in alcohol. Want to retaste when the weather is cooler, for 33 degree Celsius weather was just too rich
Red
2000 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Sassicaia
93 points
Nice classical Bordeaux style Sassicaia. Still in an early phase of its drinking window. Goes down quite easy. Elegant and multilayered. Good Stuff!!!

Flight 7 - Rieslings for Dessert (2 notes)

White - Off-dry
2006 Joh. Jos. Prüm Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
92 points
Easy drinking JJ Prüm. Hints of petrol, good acidity and long finish. Maybe a bit on the sweet side. Still young. drink over the next 20 or so years
White - Off-dry
2008 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
88 points
This was quite disappointing. It showed more like a Kabinett than an Auslese. Quite thin with low residual sugar. Almost had some fizz to it... need to retaste but was not convinced by this bottle
