The 2000 Challenge

Le Petit Sommelier

Tasted December 15, 2015 by kostaslonis with 474 views

Introduction

A long awaited testing, 3 Bordeaux cru classe from my cellar next to Sassicaia and Wolf Blass. Lazaros brought a grower champagne and someone else another red and an even older white. Testing took place at Le Petit Sommelier restaurant. We had such a laughter!!

Flight 1 (9 notes)

Red
2000 Château Cos d'Estournel France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

The nose is big on this one and opened straight away without decanting. Full and ripe showing high intensity, smoke, spicy, leather, toast with brett funk but quite welcoming, all sorts of small black fruit from currant to berries, cherries and prunes, there is a medicinal touch as well. Beautiful and just starting to turn decadent.

In the palate, the wine shows med+ body and intensity, nice acidity, chocolate, coffee, black currant, prune and black berry, earthy, fine tannins, great length and structure, a fine old world wine.

Outstanding quality, drinking now but will age.

Beautiful big ripe nose, high intensity, thick black small fruit core with cinnamon candy and nutmeg, fresh and vibrant. There are nice flowery and earthy notes too.

In the palate the wine shows big full body with high intensity, ripe tannins that still have their grip, balanced, coffee and chocolate, great length and finish. The nose is close to the Cos d'Estournel tried before but riper and fruitier while the Cos was on the earthier and spicier.

Outstanding quality, drinking now but will hold .

The nose is full ripe, high intensity, black currant, black berry and cherry, plum, vanilla, nutmeg, light toasted oak, subtle underlying complexity, it just feels so young and therefore reserved. Needs some time to lost the funk

The wine has full body and intensity, hgih acidity and big tannins, great structure, chocolate, full ripe black fruit with a finish so long and purely fruity that just seems to still be an infant.

Outstanding quality, too young.

This was the most controversial wine of them all. It was so closed and needed the most time to open up in the glass but you could just feel the thickness of the fruit and sheer complexity of the wine, so pure and so Bordeaux like. Add the price of the bottle and most of the guys voted for either Cos d'Estournel or Sassicaia. Wine of the night for me though

The wine is full upfront and extrovert, ripe small black fruit, sweet spice, vanilla, a basket full or flowers, way more feminine than the 3 Bordeaux tried before, it also makes it more welcoming, round oak frame, toast, no rough edges here. Feels fully developed but no sings of being tired.

Great in the palate, full body and high intensity, big round tannins, nice balancing acidity, flavors copy the nose, overall sweet, silky texture, long finish.

Outstanding quality, drinking gloriously now but will hold. I have to admit that this one was the hardest to resist. I would definately buy again

This one screamed Aussie blend, big australian warm fruity nose, thick fresh black fruit marmelade, prunes, vanilla, toast, minty too which was nice and offered a note of freshness. Felt fully developed as well.

The palate is intune with the nose, fragrant, bright ripe fruit, freshly made jam, runs like silk on the tongue, balanced, very smooth and oh so welcoming, very easy to to drink, med to long finish.

Outstanding quality, drink or keep but not too long

2000 Morize Pere et Fils Champagne Brut Millésimé France, Champagne

Beauticul complex nose, filled with ripe fruit, lees notes, toast, apricot marmelade, peach, buttery, medium to high intensity, very ripe and flowery.

In the palate the wine shows richness, med+ body and intensity, high acidity, lighter on the toast, pineapple and apricot, med to long finish.

Outstanding quality, drinking now but will hold. A quite "vinous" champagne, great on its own. It felt more round and ripe this time, I didn't get the quince and lime from the last time. I have to get a couple of these

The nose is old school Bordeaux, leather, spice, toast, cinnamon, nutmeg, dried red cherry & currant, cedar and "brick", there is a core of red fruit but framed from old school funk.
The wine shows med body and intensity, round, the tannins seemed dissolved, smoke, balanced but lacking strength and complexity, red fruit infused medium finish.
Very good quality, drink now. Fully developed and looking downhill

Drank on the same night but not part of the tasting
(the bottle was opened 4hr prior to the tasting and enjoyed throughout the tasting)

Dense yellow color, big nose that evolves all the time in the glass, ripe asparagus, smoke notes, sweet spice, some milky nuances, ripe stone fruit, very elegant and surprisingly not tired at all.

Big in the palate, the wine shows med to full body and intensity, medium acidity, full ripe citrus, peach and pineapple, apricot and mango, smoke again, utterly balanced, fine structure and long finish.

Outstanding quality, drinking now but believe it or not, if kept under good conditions, it will hold for more. Great great white Bordeaux

Clear green gold color. The nose is bright, clean, still fresh and fruity which is insane, very fine profile, not even close to 9yo white. With time you get sweeter nuances, light caramel hints, tin apricot, stalky spiciness. Give it time in the glass to grow.

The wine is dry, med+ body and intensity, still green in the palate, a bit of smoke and ripe peach, straightforard NZ beauty, complex, entirely welcoming, great structure, long finish of ripe tropical fruit and acidity still kicking.

Outstanding quality, drinking now but will definately hold. Loved it
