Introduction

Couple of birthday celebrations rolled into one. Food was excellent as has come to be expected from Woodberry Kitchen.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
2000 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
94 points
Medium yeast, bit of graham cracker, nice balance of fruit (somewhat tropical), very good place now.

Wow, linear, focused, sharp, doesn’t seem to be shutting down. (yet?) This is going to be a very special wine. Lemon notes on finish. Makes me think this must be at least somewhat like the 1996 was like young. Got better and better over the evening.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

White
2015 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Seems a bit shut down now. Petrol note which wasn’t there in the last bottle. Purity of fruit. Score withheld as not fair to score in this phase, but when it emerges, it should be in the 93-4 range.

White - Off-dry
2015 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese Germany, Nahe
95 points
In a beautiful place now. Slightly effervescent, floral, stone fruits, also some tropical fruits. Has there ever been a better version of this wine?

Flight 3 (3 notes)

White
2010 The Foreign Affair Chardonnay Canada, Ontario, Niagara Peninsula, Niagara Peninsula VQA
90 points
Tropical fruit, butter, balanced oak. Held its own among the other chardonnays. Great value.
White
2011 Maybach Family Vineyards Chardonnay Eterium USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
91 points
Not as Burgundian as some other vintages. More oak too. Nicely poised. Bright fruit.
White
2014 Aubert Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
95 points
What a nose, rich, powerful, buttered oak. Pure tropical, chardonnay fruit. Stunningly well made wine.

Red
1982 Confrèrie des Chevaliers du Tastevin Chambolle-Musigny Thorin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
90 points
This wine keeps amazing me. Bought a case a few years ago for virtually nothing on a flyer just based on the producer. It seems to be even getting better. Lovely example of Chambolle-Musigny. Everything in balance.
Red
1964 Nervi Ghemme Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Ghemme
90 points
Stood upright for 2+ weeks, popped and pour at dinner. Very light, but still bright. Pronounced balsamic note on the nose, but not on the palate. Still has nice amount of fruit though. Was wonderful with ‘raw beef’ from Woddberry Kitchen, reminiscent of carne cruda in Piedmonte.
Red
1967 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Cavalieri del Tartufo Pajè Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
94 points
Stood upright for couple weeks, pop and pour at dinner. What an amazingly fresh nose mixed with some balsamic notes. Beautiful wine. Fell off quicker than expected though (maybe would have come back, but didn't get the chance). Wonderfully balanced now.
Red
1967 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo Riserva Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
96 points
Upright for 2+ weeks, popped and poured at dinner. Took a little bit of time to open up, but when it did, wow! WOTN for me. Just great old(er) Barolo. Nice acidity still there. Mushrooms, some piedmont dirt. Plain lovely wine.

Red
1967 Château Ausone France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
94 points
Pop and pour. Another excellent bottle from this case. More masculine than some of them have been. Good balance. No rush to drink now, they’ll last a bit longer. Developed a nice tobacco note over time in the glass. Beautiful well aged Ausone.

Flight 5 (5 notes)

Red
2007 K Vintners Syrah Heart USA, Washington
Disjointed, a bit green (strange) and a bit odd. Very dark fruit as expected, but probably not a good example
Red
2006 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
94 points
Entering its drinking window, very very early days. Beautifully balanced expression of syrah. Some notes of bacon fat, but very little pepper. Provencal notes arriving. Will likely deserve a slightly higher score in the future.

Red
2003 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
91 points
Not nearly as dark of fruits as many of these bottles, more red, but a little bit pruney. Still a good quaff, not one of the great ones. Missing the funk that I love in Pegau too.

Red
2008 Cayuse Syrah En Chamberlin Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
92 points
Deep, dark fruit, developed a subtle green note over time. Well made, balanced, but very big with a bit of interesting funkiness. Give it a few years yet. May deserve a higher score with a long decant or in a few years time.
Red
2006 Sine Qua Non Grenache Raven Series USA, California
Huge, too much so. Purple. Just overpowering. Maybe it’ll balance out with more time? In the company it was consumed with, rather disappointing, sadly.

Flight 6 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1989 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
97 points
Took a while to open up, but when it did, most excellent. All the tropical fruit you’d ever want. Not old enough to get the coconut yet though. Good acidity, but slightly less than the best bottles of 1989 Yquem. Put on weight in the glass. Was never too sweet (as great Yquem never is). Wonderful finish to a great evening.

Amazingly not a corked or damaged bottle in the group. Birthday luck I suppose.
