Introduction

Lots of people in town. Lots of wine on the table. I got through about 1/3 of it...

Flight 1 (16 notes)

White
1993 Nikolaihof Grüner Veltliner Vinothek Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
90 points
From magnum. Generally GV really isn't my thing, but this one seemed to hit a few of the things I liked. It's definitely a bigger wine, broad and rich, with a waxy texture, but there's a spicy kick at the end, as well as ample acidity to help round it out. Quite good.
White - Sparkling
2006 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
90 points
Honestly, not showing as well as I remember it right now. Seems to be a little steely, and has a slight high-toned flavour that I'm not fond of. Let them sit for more time -- it's still clear to me that there's ample potential here.

White
2007 Edmond Vatan Sancerre Clos la Néore France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

This is a wine that has always shown a little waxy to me, and this was no exception. A slight bit of volatility here that I didn't like (nor did I get a chance to revisit this bottle, so I don't know if it blew off). Very high toned, but plenty of acidity on the palate too.
White
2007 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
90 points
(Wax top.) This shows a bit of ripeness in the form of peachy fruit. It's rounded, but there's good cut here. The acidity here isn't a bracing mineral line, but it's cloaked with some sweet stone fruit. It rounds out in your palate -- a really nice bottle.
White
2015 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault Les Narvaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
90 points
Sweet and sulphur on the nose. The acidity, minerality, and reduction are all classic white Burgundy, but the fruit profile veers slightly sweet and ripe -- a bit more so than I like. Still, it's carried very well by the rest of the wine.
White - Sparkling
2012 Chartogne-Taillet Champagne Les Barres France, Champagne
93 points
This is what meunier should be (Prevost -- take note). Super powerful, with a delicious note of tart red apple on both the nose and palate. Very intense, with a generous mousse and a slight bit of bread. I'm so glad I got to try this -- saves me from having to kill one of mine.

N.V. Vouette et Sorbée Champagne Fidèle France, Champagne

R10, disgorged October 15, 2013. From magnum. There's a sudden hit of sweet fruit on this wine on the attack, but besides that, this is a very lean and terse sort of champagne, showing intense chalk and acidity, but less giving on the fruit and bread qualities.
White
2002 Louis Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
90 points
Shows the ripeness of the vintage. A little waxy and tons of ripe stone fruit. Sappy, with just a hint of applies that are on the verge of turning brown (not premox -- more like secondary characteristics). A broad, expansive texture on the palate.
White - Off-dry
1999 Willi Schaefer Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
93 points
The nose here is just slightly funky, in the way old riesling tends to be. In a perfect window for the secondary characteristics, with a good dose of petrol, but this hasn't lost its fruit yet either. There are also some really nice herbal elements here; would have loved to pick up a little more acidity and cut. It's a very gentle wine.

2007 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Germany, Nahe

From magnum. Incredible honey and fruit notes on the nose. Clearly ripe, but not overdone at all. The palate is clearly sweet, and while the acidity is present, it is not screaming at you either. Lots and lots of peach -- as I joked, the selection massale that happened in the vineyard must've included the peach tree's fruit as well. Clean and rich, but elegant with the classic weightlessness.

White - Sweet/Dessert
1985 Joseph Phelps Johannisberg Riesling Late Harvest USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
I love these old weird Napa rieslings. Deep amber colour, with a surprisingly complex herbal nose -- licorice, cardamom, that kind of thing. The palate is fairly spicy, and the sugar comes across as deeply caramelized and complex. Doesn't have the acid cut that I love in my German rieslings, but this is special stuff for sure.

N.V. Jérôme Prévost Champagne La Closerie Extra Brut Les Beguines France, Champagne

LC12. I think this is a relatively better bottling than the LC13 or LC14. Lots of chalkiness, and a rounded quality that fills out the wine more than I usually remember it having. I still have trouble figuring out my relationship with this producer, honestly.
Red
2012 Château Rayas Côtes du Rhône La Pialade France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
90 points
It's like one of those light glou glou hipster wines, but good. Super floral nose, with beautiful perfume and red fruit. The palate is very light, and has the texture of a natural wine, but there's no dirtiness or mousiness or undue flavours at all. Clean as a whistle. A generous amount of white pepper on the palate, but this veers just a bit to becoming too stemmy for me.

1997 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay Vendanges Sélectionnées France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay

At this point, I think this has seen some better years. It's still a good bottle, and shows surprisingly dense and tight for the vintage (and I got to this wine much closer to the end of the evening), but a lot of the fresher flavours are on the downswing. Some black fruit if you're looking for it, and none of those nasty rotty flavours that sometimes poke out in 1997.

I've been dying to try these wines -- so glad I finally got a chance to. I like this very much -- the nose opens with some green stems, red fruit, and that black volcanic sulphur. It's really lovely, sort of like gamay without all that unpleasant candied sweetness. The palate is a bit too austere for my taste though: the green stems are far too prominent and detract from the otherwise nice red fruit and light body. Super sneaky tannins on the back end though!

2002 Simon Bize Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Vergelesses France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru

Got to this one a little later in the evening. The fruit shows the ripeness of the vintage, but even then, it is still clear that this is a wine made in a more rustic style. The tannins, especially, make that obvious. Perhaps a bit stemmy for my palate -- I'd love a little bit more sweet fruit on these wines (of course, I realize that's not really Savigny).
