Introduction

Six of us got together for at Jason's for a great evening with a nice mix of older cabs and Bordeaux and a stellar '95 Clos des Papes

Flight 1 (9 notes)

White - Sparkling
1999 Billecart-Salmon Champagne Cuvée Nicolas François Billecart France, Champagne
92 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. This was one of the bottles that was simply very good vs great. It did seem to open and really display some pretty character on the nose with fresh bread dough, pastry cream, nut horns and pear that was well delineated. The palate was a little defined with apple, pear, chalk, and yellow fruits with a soft texture. I liked it a lot, but it did lack the expected wow factor.

White
2013 Kistler Chardonnay Trenton Roadhouse USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Light golden color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. I thought this was really nice, very even handed and I'd go so far as to actually say fairly Burgundian in character. Tangerine, lemon peel, mineral, some richness, lemon oil, more mineral, tangy, hints of dried cedar box on the nose, long. The age has served this well, the oak is integrated and this comes off well balanced.

1995 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
95 points
Very dark red color, slightly cloudy. PNP, drank a glass over an hour plus. Wow, another fantastic bottle of '95. The nose is flat out stunning again and the palate is not too far behind. Gorgeous nose of crushed flowers, red fruits, leather, damp earth and touches of funk, anise. The palate shows more funk and earth, leather, kirsch, black fruits, garrigue, spiced, pepper, very long. My and group WOTN by a big margin. I think these are at peak, but they have a solid 10 years ahead of them with no worries

Very dark red/purple color. 30 minutes splash decant. Drank 1+ glass over 3 hours. Somewhat tight on pouring this opens over the next 30 minutes. Lots of cedar box on the nose with a very lead pencil, mineral laden, later yet the earth comes forth, brooding dark fruits that evolve to cassis and and blue fruits. The palate is full bodied, concentrated, but still also shy, eventually the black and blue fruits emerge here too, tart, cassis, boysenberry, oak, pencil. I liked this a lot, powerful and yet seemed less well defined overall.

2001 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection USA, California, Napa Valley

Very dark red/purple color. Slow-O for an hour or so. I fully admit to really liking this wine. It is brimming with such pretty black fruit, yet I find so much complexity to go along with that to make it anything but monolithic. And also importantly, there is none of the things that I find so disillusioning about so many bigger new world wines. I really like the nose here, very earthy, damp leaves and soil, creme de cassis, sandalwood, blackberry, violet and graphite. The palate is full bodied and concentrated, again that pretty black and dark red berry fruit, cassis, black raspberry and blackberries, some blackberry liqueur, graphite, glycerin, some scorched earth, umami, dark and succulent with very fine silky tannins, quite lengthy too. Impressive. I'm curious as to where this goes as there is still a lot primary fruit, but it has plenty of secondary character at 17 years. The suggested window is nearing an end, but I tend to disagree with that. I'm not seeing anything that would suggest this is at risk of falling apart. If anything, this might actually get better. I'd be happy to revisit in a this in an other 5 years to check in.

1995 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
92 points
Very dark red color. Decanted for 3.5 hours, drank 1 glass over 90 minutes. Lots of earth here and a touch of funk, cassis and violets on the nose. The palate starts a bit austere, tart, black cherry, but it develops more depth and intensity and the cassis comes forth too. A bit of heat late. 92+pts.

Red
1997 Château Cheval Blanc France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
91 points
Medium dark red color with a 1.5 cm bricked margin. Slow-O for 2.5 hours. The nose is better than the palate with graphite, soft dark fruits, spice and wood tones; thinner on the palate, cassis, wood, a bit shorter. Good for the vintage, but you always hope for more.
Red
2003 Château Léoville Poyferré France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
Very dark red/purple color. 3.5 hour decant. Dry earth, pencil, dark and murky fruits, spices, and oak. The palate is higher toned, graphite, tart red raspberry, black currant, medium plus length. I've had this several times now, but this bottle was a bit less expressive for whatever reason, though i suspect it is still just too young. 92(+)pts.

White - Sweet/Dessert
1999 Château Rieussec France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
94 points
Deep golden to amber color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes Very bright on the nose, creme brulee, tangerine, peach, pineapple, honey, great texture, spice, wonderful balance. Damn these are good, but I just realized it was my last bottle - going to have to find more.

WOTN was the '95 Clos des Papes. There was a tie for #2 WOTN with the '01 Caymus SS and the Ridge Monte Bello
