Introduction

A tasting to celebrate the Winter Solstice at 23:23 o' clock with a few wine lovers...

Flight 1 (1 note)

White
2014 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Charlemagne Domaine France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
93 points
Winter Solstice tasting.
Apéritif in the billiards room to whet the palate. Pretty open and generous, both bottles drank tonight showed well and the same.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

White
2012 Inglenook Blancaneaux USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
89 points
Winter Solstice tasting.
Served in the same flight as the 2013 Louis Jadot Montrachet Grand Cru. Weird, but interesting nose of waxed cheese crust. Not bad, but not very good either.
White
2013 Louis Jadot Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
94 points
Winter Solstice tasting.
A big wine, a bold nose. Not sure where Louis Jadot get's the Montrachet grapes from, but they do a fine job expressing the terroir. Very broad.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

White
2004 Domaine d'Auvenay (Lalou Bize-Leroy) Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
98 points
Winter Solstice tasting. Bottle number 0272 of 1224.
This wine is so special...What an amazing nose, my first Folatières by d' Auvenay. A wine I will never forget, many thanks to Guus from bringing this superb wine. Kept the glass during the entire night to smell from sometimes...Entering all the notes now two days after the tasting, this wine is still haunting me!
If this 1er Cru is this good, then just exactly how good is the Chevalier-Montrachet by d' Auvenay?!
Red
1959 Maison Leroy Grands-Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
96 points
Winter Solstice tasting.
Served in the same flight as the 2004 Domaine d'Auvenay (Lalou Bize-Leroy) Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières, so this flight was pretty amazing and very special!
So good for a 59-year old wine. Still has good fruit and some nice chocolate orange zest notes...

Flight 4 (2 notes)

White
2007 Etienne Sauzet Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
95 points
Winter solstice tasting.
Some evolved notes in both nose- and taste, but still very good. Sauzet managed (maybe because of the slender vintage?) to make a very elegant expression of the Montrachet terroir!
Red
2001 Domaine Jean Grivot Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
93 points
Winter Solstice tasting.
95 nose...Amazing nose! 91 taste, very rustic and in a strange place. It does have the richness of Richebourg however.

Flight 5 (1 note)

Red
2005 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
94 points
Winter Solstice tasting.
From Magnum. Great fun this Echezeaux...Such a delightful drink and very very youthful still. The fruit shows like a 2015!

Flight 6 (2 notes)

White
2009 Pierre Morey Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
95 points
Winter Solstice tasting.
A very good Bâtard...Super balance and a real joy to drink. Pretty "old school" style of white Burgundy!
Red
2007 Giuseppe Quintarelli Cabernet Alzero Italy, Veneto, Veneto IGT
96 points
Winter Solstice tasting.
Very fine- and rare. Such a delicious wine, with dominant Cabernet Franc notes...Would love to try this with more bottle age!

Red
1989 Château La Mission Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
96 points
Winter Solstice tasting.
Paired with the 1989 Haut Brion, this won in the taste & power but lacked the truly amazing nose of the '89 Haut Brion.

Flight 8 (3 notes)

Red
2000 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
97 points
Winter Solstice tasting.
Served in a flight alongside with the 2003 Château Latour Grand Vin, which slightly had the upper hand today! Probably this 2000 will win over time though...
Red
2003 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
98 points
Winter Solstice tasting.
To make a wine as good as this in a vintage like 2003, that really shows craftsmanship! Superbe...
Red
2003 Château Haut-Bages Averous France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
89 points
Winter Solstice tasting.
Brought in spontaneous by JD, but suffered from the stiff competition (2000 & 2003 Latour). Not bad though!

Flight 9 (3 notes)

White
1995 Kalin Cellars Chardonnay Cuvée D USA, California, Sonoma County
Winter Solstice tasting.
Not rated, for my personal taste just too evolved / oxidized...
Red
2000 Kalin Cellars Pinot Noir Cuvée DD USA, California, Sonoma County
Winter Solstice tasting.
Not rated, too much volatile acidity...
Red
1934 Viuva José Gomes da Silva & Filhos Colares Reserva Velho Portugal, Lisboa, Colares
Winter Solstice tasting.
A fun wine, bottled in 65cl bottle. Very drying finish...

Flight 10 (2 notes)

Red
1999 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Masseto Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
94 points
Winter Solstice tasting.
Very impressive keeping in mind that the vineyards were not that old still in 1999...The essence of Merlot!
Red
2005 Château Pavie France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Winter Solstice tasting.
Not rated because I am not sure what to make of it, because this wine is very contradictory...It possesses some qualities which are very positive, but at the same time not in a good balance (today).

Flight 11 (4 notes)

White
2009 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett Alte Reben Auction Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
92 points
Winter Solstice tasting.
Served in a flight of 3 Auctions wines, as the first one. Not quite sweet enough for the goose liver terrine that JD made, but oh well...Drinking Egon Müller's Kabinett is always a treat, especially when it is an Auction bottle!
White - Off-dry
2007 Schloss Lieser Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese Auction Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
92 points
Winter Solstice tasting.
The nose shows some oxidation, which is sad because otherwise the score would be 94 or higher easily. The taste is just that good!
White - Off-dry
2006 Schloss Lieser Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Lange Goldkapsel Auction Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
95 points
Winter Solstice tasting.
Minimum BA level this delicious Auction wine from Thomas Haag at the Schloss Lieser. Such a treat, thanks Sjaak for bringing this amazing bottle!
White - Sweet/Dessert
1976 Louis Guntrum Oppenheimer Schützenhütte Ruländer Beerenauslese Germany, Rheinhessen
Winter Solstice tasting.
Another spontaneous bottle by JD. This was a Magnum. Pretty good for it's age, but not on the level of the 3 previous Auction wines!

Flight 12 (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
2004 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill France, Champagne
93 points
Winter Solstice tasting.
Paired with caviar...Pretty rich and complex! Retains freshness as well.

White - Sparkling
1999 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
94 points
Winter Solstice tasting.
Paired with caviar and served alongside 2004 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill. This for me had the upper hand...Just a bit more complete and compelling!

Flight 13 (2 notes)

Red
1961 Château Cantemerle France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
87 points
Winter Solstice tasting.
Another spontaneous bottle brought in by JD...Completely mature, a bit metallic. Not bad though!
Red
1990 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
91 points
Winter Solstice tasting.
Another JD bottle...In a really fine place right now, drinking elegantly and feminine!
