Introduction

WineStreet hosted a marathon 2005 Burgundy tasting featuring a long lineup of negotiant wines. We powered through 26 offerings in just over three hours. This was a great value at $40, and another fun and educational evening. Believe the hype, the 2005 reds are incredible wines at all levels. Dave Dalluge, Chris Larson, and I headed off to 112 Eatery for a late-night dinner afterwards, which was a blast as always.

Flight 1 - Whites (8 notes)

These were all very good. Many of the 2005s I have tasted are ripe, fat, and sweet, with lots of tropical fruit flavors. Some of them are a lot of fun. In general I am finding that I prefer the vintage character of 2004, although I am happy to own many 2005s as well.

White
2005 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis 1er Cru Montmains France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
90 points
From a very small pour, so tough to evaluate. Nice lemon, citrus, and mineral flavors. Seems quite ripe, with a good amount of cut and acidity.
White
2005 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
91 points
Rounder and smoother in the mouth than the Montmains. Also quite ripe, showing tropical fruit and lemon curd, stony minerals, and a hint of dry botrytis.
White
2005 Louis Jadot Meursault France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
86 points
Slight grassy note on the nose. Ripe butterscotch, lemon/citrus, and toasty oak. Doesn't have the precision, acidity, depth of the other whites.
White
2005 Louis Jadot Chassagne-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet
87 points
Fat and plump. The attack is sweet, and the midpalate follows through with honey, butter, and toasty oak. Low acidity. Fleshy.
White
2005 Louis Jadot Puligny-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
90 points
Richer gold color compared with the Jadot Chassagne. Ripe, fresh apples and flowers. Very good cut, definition, and acidity. Some pineapple flavors on the finish hint at the ripe character of the vintage. In spite of the ripeness, this comes across as quite subtle and complex. An outstanding villages Puligny.
White
2005 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes-Dessus France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
89 points
Very ripe and sweet. A lot of tropical fruit, including kiwi and pineapple. Moderate acidity. This is large-scaled and not especially elegant at this point.
White
2005 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
92 points
Nice steely cut and minerality. Rich, complex, lightly sweet apples and orange zest. Excellent acidity. One of my favorite white 2005s to date, although I'm not sure it's worth the ~$100 price tag. WOTF for me.
White
2005 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
91 points
This was actually poured after all the reds, and it was tough for my palate to re-adjust. Another ripe and lightly sweet 2005, with long, rich citrus fruit framed by quite a bit of toasty oak. Excellent and very young. For the price, I would probably buy Henri Boillot's excellent 2005 CC ahead of this.

Flight 2 - Reds (18 notes)

The 2005 village wines are shutting down, and I expect that the 1er and Grand Cru-level wines are not far behind. This flight had a couple of good discoveries, including Jadot's Vosne-Romanee and Beaune Les Boucherottes. I imagine Jadot's Clos des Urseles (not tasted here) will be great too. I continue to be impressed with both Jadot and Nicholas Potel.

Red
2005 Louis Jadot Santenay Clos de Malte France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Santenay
85 points
Nice nose of fresh tart cherries and earth/tobacco. On the palate this is thinner, and a touch stern, showing light strawberry and watermelon fruit.
Red
2005 Louis Jadot Nuits St. Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges
89 points
Deep maroon color. Classic Nuits flavors of blood/iron, ripe dark cherries, and smoke. As it sat in the glass, this closed down pretty hard. This won't win any points for finesse, but is a good effort that seems true to its terroir. Wait 3-5+ years before touching these.
Red
2005 Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
90 points
Lacy, dark cherry fruit and earth/forest floor. Medium concentration; nice finesse and minerality. True to its terroir. Tight and a touch closed, although much more open than the other villages wines in this flight. Excellent. Wait 3-5+ years before touching these.
Red
2005 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Funky dark fruit, medium body, and a huge wall of tannins. Closed down hard. Wait 5+ years before trying these. Judgment reserved.
Red
2005 Bouchard Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
88 points
Riper and softer than the Jadot Gevrey. The nose is enticing and complex, full of funky ripe red fruit, but the palate falls off a bit. Showing a lot of oak. Perhaps getting ready to close down, like the other villages Gevreys in this flight.
Red
2005 Nicolas Potel Gevrey-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
Dark fruit. No nose -- this is completely shut down. Wait 5+ years before touching these. Judgment reserved.
Red
2005 Louis Jadot Vosne-Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
91 points
Ripe, dense, sappy dark cherry fruit. Still quite primal, and bursting with sweet fruit, although there are hints of allspice and soy. Great texture and structure. A very impressive effort.
Red
2005 Bouchard Père et Fils Vosne-Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
88 points
Nice nose of fresh red cherries. The midpalate is less sappy and concentrated than the Jadot V-R, and the acidity is much higher. For now the acidity gives the wine a nice sense of freshness, although it seems borderline high on the finish.
Red
2005 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Couchereaux Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
89 points
Meaty and earthy, with nice, bright, ripe red fruit. This took on a riper character as it sat in the glass, picking up almost New World-ish cinnamon stick and orange peel flavors.
Red
2005 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Boucherottes Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
92 points
Pretty and bright, with much deeper, denser fruit than the Jadot Clos des Couchereaux. Baking spices and earth hint at future secondary flavor evolution. For now this is primal, fresh and delicious, and already quite complex. An eye-opener for me and a nice QPR at $42.
Red
2005 Nicolas Potel Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Vignes Franches France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
90 points
Intriguingly funky/stinky nose. On the palate this shows super-ripe, almost pruny, red fruit. This seems to be just on the edge of surmaturite, but not quite over the line. It doesn't have a roasted character, just a lot of very sweet fruit. I liked it, and there is a chance that it may settle down over the next few years. Interesting, albeit a bit controversial at our tasting table.
Red
2005 Nicolas Potel Volnay Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay
89 points
My second taste of this. Consistent with my prior TN. Ripe, fresh cherry fruit. A nice perfumed nose. I picked up a little more brown sugar this time.
Red
2005 Nicolas Potel Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
91 points
My second taste of this. Open, floral, and expressive. Gorgeously ripe fruit. Compared with the previous bottle, this showed better integrated oak and riper fruit.
Red
2005 Louis Jadot Pommard 1er Cru Clos de la Commaraine France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
90 points
Great funky, spicy nose. Deep and earthy, with red (rhubarb) fruit. I'm not an especially big fan of Pommard in general, but this showed well. I really liked the earth/forest floor character of this wine.
Red
2005 Nicolas Potel Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
92 points
My second taste of this. Consistent with prior TN. Ripe red cherries and an additional slight spearmint component. Delicious.
Red
2005 Louis Jadot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
93 points
Gorgeous, intense, perfumed nose. Deep, ripe, and primal. The palate shows a kaleidoscope of flavors and is rich with Asian spice, caramel, and sappy dark fruit. Still open for business. Delicious.
Red
2005 Nicolas Potel Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
93 points
Flat-out gorgeous nose. Flowers, sappy fresh red cherries, and earth. Primal and still open for business. There is a delicious underlying meatiness to this wine.

2005 Nicolas Potel Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
93 points
Wide open for business. Rich, perfumed, fragrant nose. Deep, rich, earthy dark cherries, with earth/forest floor lurking underneath. Quite tannic. A delicious Clos Vougeot. WOTF for me.

Flight 3 - 112 Eatery (2 notes)

I didn't take any formal notes here, as we were too busy talking and enjoying 112's amazing food.

Red
2004 Calera Pinot Noir Selleck Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Mount Harlan
From half bottle. No formal notes taken. Very ripe and young.
