Introduction
Great vertical Tasting of Breuer's Schloßberg ve Nonnenberg 1996-2008 @ Breuer winery with charming Theresa Breuer. Thanks to Marcus for invitation and organizing.
From my experiences I expected that Nonnenberg would be the "winner", but it was narrowly vice versa. In the hotter years Nonnenberg has because of his cooler Climate the more focused wine.
Flight 1 (3 notes)
Too young, saline, discreet yellow Stone fruits, lime, not decanted. 92
too Young, great acidity structure but missing the fruit in this stage, closed
too Young, not balanced, For Breuer Schloßberg a bit too sweet. peach, apricot and Grapefruit. 92
Flight 2 (1 note)
Too aromatic in nose and palate. For me Riesling Grape is not a good choose for sparkling wine. 87
Flight 3 (4 notes)
flight with Nonnenberg 03 and Schloßberg and Nonnenberg 2005.All wines very Close in Quality and suprisingly fresh for the hot years. In this flight I would prefer the Nonnenberg 03
In the nose spicy, some flintstone in the palate. feels heavier and broader than the Counterpart. Mountain peach. good acidity. 93-94
flight with Nonnenberg 03 and Schloßberg and Nonnenberg 2005. All wines very Close in Quality and suprisingly fresh for the hot years. In this flight I would prefer the Nonnenberg 03
Leaner, spicier than SB. Still Young and not that fat as you expect for the vintage. It has a cooler climate than SB. Good concentration, maybe a hint short in finish. 94
flight with Nonnenberg 03 and Schloßberg and Nonnenberg 2005.All wines very Close in Quality and suprisingly fresh for the hot years. In this flight I would prefer the Nonnenberg 03
From the colour a bit darker than 03, yellow plum, etherical and herbal and Ends with yellow fruits. 93
flight withSchlossberg 05 and Schloßberg and Nonnenberg 2003. All wines very Close in Quality and suprisingly fresh for the hot years. In this flight I would prefer the Nonnenberg 03
Peppermint tea. Leaner than SB, Extract sweetness, compact, a bit closed. Yuzu in the finish. 93-94
Flight 4 (4 notes)
flight with Nonnenberg 00 and Schloßberg and Nonnenberg 2006. The weakest flights. Winner was Nonne 2006
Ripe yellow peaches, I think overripe, a bit alcoholic and tired, some nuts but not precise in the finish. 90
the weakest wine of the evening. Burned candyfloss, maybe a dfective bottle. 89
flight with Nonnenberg 06 and Schloßberg and Nonnenberg 2000. The weakest flights. A bit over his top, respectively too overripe fruit. Broad, more concentration than 2000 but not precise enough, missing the razorsharp Schloßberg Breuer acidity. 91
Good density. Strongest wine in this flight. Yellow fruits as apricot and plum. Opulent in the end. 92
Flight 5 (4 notes)
flight with Nonnenberg 07 and Roseneck 07. All wines were very Close in Quality. In this flight I would prefer the Nonnenberg 07.
In the palate a bit fullbodied and ripe yellow plum, herbal and spicy but with time more powerful and more precise. lime notes in the end. 92-93
Together with Nonne and Schloßberg 2007
Wet Stones, juicy, a bit short in the finish. 92
Flight 6 (4 notes)
flight with Nonnenberg 01 and Schloßberg and Nonnenberg 2008.
Some vegetal (cabbage) notes, few fruits, austere, at the end some pink Grapefruit. I had it stronger, maybe not a perfect bottle. 93
Not a perfect bottle, some cabbage, getting better with some air in the glas. 90
flight with Nonnenberg 08 and Schloßberg and Nonnenberg 2001. Stunnind and awesome. Wine of the Night and for me in the Top5.
Fresh, powerful and reluctant. Yuzu, Popcorn, Saline, great acidity and not too herbal. Not reached his top but Close. 96+
Very controversial wine at the table. Undescribable nose, some herbals, juicy, very precise and not Close to his Peak. Could be a real stunner in a few years. 95+
Flight 7 (3 notes)
flight with Nonnenberg 02 and Orleans 2002. Candyfloss, Theresa means typical for old Schloßberg. Awesome acidity. Not at his Peak. 93
Cabbage, vegetabel. Getting better with air but too aromatic
A bit less concentrated than the Schloßberg. Close to his top. 92
Flight 8 (5 notes)
flight with Nonnenberg 97 and Schloßberg and Nonnenberg 2004. All wines and phantastic and very Close in Quality. All wines in the Top 5. And SB 1997 WOTN.
Candyfloss, fine, reluctant, concentrated, phenolic, great length and precision. At his top at least for 5 more years. 97+
A tremendous wine, maybe just a step behind Schloßberg 1997. Spicy, at his Peak but still lime dominated. 96-97
flight with Nonnenberg 04 and Schloßberg and Nonnenberg 1997. First bottle corked but the second replaced by Therese Breuer (directly from the maison) was fresh, powerful and still dominated from his Primary notes. for the next decade. 97
After the awesome SB 2004 (second bottle from the winery) it felt a bit short and less dense but phantastically balanced. Reluctant and fresh. 95
Flight 9 (3 notes)
flight with Nonnenberg 98 and Rottland 2008. Spicy, More powerful than 97 but not elegance and filigree. Precise finish. 94
Missing the length compared to the SB. Amazingly fresh and citrus influenced, precise finish. 92-93
Together with Schloßberg and Nonnenberg 1998
For many the winner in this flight for the table. For me a bit too unprecise in the finish. 92-93
Flight 10 (4 notes)
flight with Nonnenberg 96 and Schloßberg and Nonnenberg 1999.
Not so good as 97 but a touch more freshness than 1998. Still Young but a touch of vegetal in the finish. 95
Some honey and botrytis. Amazing acidity. 92
flight with Nonnenberg 99 and Schloßberg and Nonnenberg 1996. For me corked
Some Botrytis I expected leaner but nicely balanced from a refreshing and Saline acidity. 94
Flight 11 (5 notes)
I guessed Künstler, Not so nice for the nose, ripe banana, Needs time to get round, but for me over his Peak. 90
I guessed Keller Pettenthal 2017 frokm keller because of this flintstone notes, spicy, less fruit notes, austere and precise. Much too Young, pleasant extract sweetness. 95+
I was flashed. The nose is 100. Never ending Roasted Popcorn, no nuts, Rice waffles, I guessed Burgundy GC and Chardonnay. Perfectly oaked. Nothing disturbs. Killing acidity but not annoying. Thanks Richie for sharing this bottle. First bottle of d'Auvenay. Lifetime experience. 98+
Nose and colour clearly Burgundy but in the palate too powerful and missing elegance. The oak and Tannins are not fully integrated. GC Quality but for me too heavy. 92
Filigree, red berries, violet and silky Tannins but in the finish I missed seome velvety and elegance. At his peak. 92-93
Closing
My top 5
SB 97
SB 04 (second bottle from the winery)
Nonnen 97
Schloss 08
Nonne 04
Nonnenberg 08 crazy wine, ages away from his Peak
The wines need at least 10 years of cellaring, even in hot years as 03, 05 or 07 great, lean, saline wines with elegance and structure
2000 is a bad vintage
D'Auvebay Aligote 2014 a wine out of this world
